Hearing and Eye Conservation
The goal of the Hearing Conservation Program is to prevent occupational hearing loss. Navy policy requires that Navy personnel exposed to eye hazardous areas or operations are provided adequate eye protection at government expense.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
PPE is employed to reduce or eliminate personal exposure to hazards. All personnel will be familiar with the use of PPE.
Emergency eye wash stations
Emergency facilities shall be located where they are easily accessible to those in need.
Smoking/open flame
Smoking or open flames shall not be permitted within 50 feet of parked aircraft, hangers, bays, etc.
Aircraft grounding
Aircraft shall be electrically grounded during all maintenance evolutions.
Fire lanes
Lanes suitable for fire fighting equipment shall be clearly marked and kept clear.
Fall arrest
Safety harnesses, lanyards, lifelines, and drop lines shall be used to protect against falls from elevations where it is impractical to provide standard guardrails or ladder cages.101.2 Define the term HERO and discuss the safety precautions associated with handling Cartridge Actuated Devices (CADS).
Do not unlatch or latch the forward upper cargo door with the airplane on jacks. The jacking site should be protected from the wind, preferably in a hangar.
Nose and main
Severe structural damage will occur if the wing jacks are released while the jacks are raised at both fuselage jack points.
Discuss the safety precautions for handling Skydrol (phosphate ester hydraulic fluid).
Before performing any operation on the hydraulic system, personnel should understand that extreme caution will be used when working with Skydrol. It is very dangerous when in contact with the skin and eyes and proper protection is to be used at all times.
101.5 Discuss the safety precautions associated with fueling/defueling operations.
Always approach the wheel from fore or aft, never from the side.
Discuss the concept of Operational Risk Management (ORM).
ORM is a systematic, decision-making process used to identify and manage hazards that endanger Naval resources. The 5 steps to ORM are: identify hazards, assess hazards, make risk decisions, implements controls, supervise.
Conduct a preliminary hazard analysis of all potential hazards.
Assess hazards
For each hazard identified, determine the associated degree of risk in terms of probability and severity.
Making risk decisions
Start with the most serious risk first and select controls that will reduce the risk overall. You then must decide if the benefit will justify the risk or if the risk is to great.
Implement controls
Place control measures into effect to eliminate hazards or reduce the degree of risk.
Supervise
Conduct follow-up evaluations of the controls to ensure they remain in place and have the desired effect.
