10/12/99	Tu	Read "The Chinese Home" and "Chinese Inventions, Can you name them?"  (pages 57-62) Answer questions on page 58.

10/13/99	W	Read pages 63-71 on "The Buddha," "The Four Noble Truths," and "The Eightfold Path"

		Answer the six questions on page 70 on "The Four Noble Truths" (FYI: impermenance means, "something that is not permenant; that changes; and will not last forever").

		Answer the two questions on page 71 in the middle of the page on "The Eightfold Path."

10/14//99	Th	Read pages 72-73 on "the Way, or the Tao."  Read page 74 on "Taoism and Legalism," and read #1 and #3 on page 75, #19 and #32 on page 77, and #57 on page 78.
			
			Lao-Tzu is considered to be the author of the Tao-te-Ching (or "book of the way")
			The Way or the Tao means "the path," or "the way to live."
			Wu-Wei means "nonaction" or "go with the flow."

		Write a 4 sentence description in your spiral of what you think Taoism is.
		Write a 2 sentence description of what you think Legalism is.

		Answer the following questions:
1) What kind of quality or virtue is jen or humanity? What kind of person could be called a person of humanity?
2) How might filial piety help to stabilize society and prevent chaos?
3) If you were a ruler during the time of Confucius, would you have accepted his advice about government?  Why or why not?
4) Write a one sentence description of Mencius.
5) Write a one sentence description of Han Fei-tze.
6) Write a one sentence description of Chuang-tzu.
