Angelus
Without a doubt Angel is the most important vampire in the world of
Buffy.He is both Buffy's greatest love and worst enemy,the source of
her greatest happiness and deepest despair.Here I'll discuss Angel's
dark side,referring to him as Angelus.As we learn in the first part of
the second season finale,in 1753,in Galway,Ireland,Angel was a drunken
scoundrel intent upon filching some of his father's silver to buy
himself a night of love at the local brethel.He is distracted in his
purpose by Darla,to whom he boasts:"My lady,you will find that,with
the exception of an honest day's work,there is no challenge I am not
prepared to face."Darla,amused,takes him at his word and not only
invites him to her vampiric embrace,but sires him into eternal life
as a vampire.There is an interesting parallel between Angel's initiation
into his new world and Buffy's,when,as a shallow 15 year old,she meets
her first Watcher Merrick.But while Buffy becomes the heroic Slayer
the Irish lad Angel becomes Angelus,"the one with the angelic face,"
the scourge of Europe.The Master calls him "The most vicious creature
I met."One of his many evil deeds revealed thus far in the series was
his insidous manipulation of Drusilla,a young English woman who is
plauged by visions.The year is 1860.Her mother has told her clairvoyance
is the work of the Devil,and the sadistic Angelus,posing as a priest in
the confessional,takes full advantage of her confusion.Angelus drives
the poor Drusilla mad,exploiting her troubled mental state and killing
every one she loves.In desperation,she flees to a convent,and on the
day she takes the veil he turns her into a vampire.He had also earlier
killed his own family,and for over a century thereafter offers an ugly
death to everyone he meets.Eventually Angelus leaves England-with his
sire Darla,with whom he is romantically involved-and they wreak havoc
throughout Europe.In Budapest they pluck human beings like fruit off
the vine.He also likes to torture people and animals,as he once did to
Giles.Angelus would have probably continued his career as a violent
animal-except that one fatal night,Darla brings him a Gypsy girl to
feed upon.Upon discovering her dead body,her clan,the Romany,decides
to take revenge on,Angelus by returning his soul to him.From that time
untill now the Romany has sent someone to spy on him making sure the
curse is making his life a Hell on Earth.But what Angel did not know
was if he was happy even for a second the spell would be broken and he
would be reverted back to his evil side.After his night of passion with
Buffy he runs into the night and howls as his soul leaves his body.
As the newly formed Angel his first feat is to prey upon a live human
then he looks for Spike and Dru to reassert his dominance over them.
Engrossed as the couple are in their new toy,the Judge,it takes them
a moment to realize why he has stepped into their lair.Angelus
immediatly assigns himself the head of the family,Spike,Dru,and himself.
He leers at Drusilla and implies at every possible turn that he is
sleeping with Dru,giving Spike infuriating jealousy.Angelus's next
order of business is to destroy anything from his human-like life
including the girl that made him happy-Buffy.At first he attempts to
murder her friends starting with Willow,but is thwarted by Jenny
Calendar who holds a cross long enough near him so Buffy can pound him.
Seeing she is the strongest Slayer he has come across,he plays mind
games with her:drawing pictures of her sleeping,killing Willow's fish,
threatening Ms. Summers and telling her he slept with her daughter.
At this time Angelus finds out Jenny the girl sent to spy on him is
trying to recurse him-and restore his soul.He goes to the school
smashes the Orb of Thesulah which was supposed to house his soul,
ruins all her translations of the spell he can find and hunts her down
and breaks her neck.So he stops trying to kill the Slayer himself
but in turn tries to bring Hell to Earth by unleashing Acathla
but Buffy kills him but he's not dead and not without a soul.
Angel is sent back from Hell and Buffy takes care of him. Angel at one time helps Buffy and the gang find out that Faith has turned to the mayor's side. The Mayor trying to get him back sends Faith out to kill him witha poisoned arrow which contains a potion on it to kill vampires. To save Angel Buffy makes him drink her, Angel feeds on her and then takes her to the hospital. He later tells her that he will stay to help defeat the Mayor but after that's over he's going to leave so he doesn't cause anymore pain towards Buffy and himself. After Angel leads the students into battle against the Mayor he leaves in a puff of smoke. He now has his own show Angel. Angel has moved to L.A. where he runs a business with Cordelia, and Wesley helping those in need of help and are in danger. He has fallen in love with Darla who is now alive and has turned evil but still has a soul. Angel is played by David Boreanaz.
