PROFILE
The Kings had high hopes when they signed Aaron Trahair at the beginning of the season. The loss of Shane Heal had left Sydney without a point guard, and Trahair was expected to step up and take the reigns of the Kings. Somehow, it never turned out like that in 1997. At only 21 years of age, and having played mostly at shooting guard alongside Ricky Grace at Perth, Trahair was not ready to be in control of an NBL club. After numerous disappointing performances, Trahair was moved to the off-guard role which allowed Isaac Burton to play point-guard. In his first outing in his new position, Trahair played a fine all around game, scoring 11 points and also contributing 6 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. He scored in double figures in his next seven outings, and actually improved his assists average even though he wasn’t running the point. Aaron played his best game of the season against South East Melbourne on 21st June, scoring a team-high 19 points on 7-11 shooting to go along with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. He was the only King prepared to go to the basket late in the game, which Sydney lost 89-88. Unfortunately for both himself and the team, Trahair suffered a season ending foot injury after the All-Star break. He is sure to be back next year, though, with a Kings season under his belt. If Sydney sign Brett Maher from Adelaide as is rumoured, Trahair will be able to play the entire season at shooting guard, which will relieve a lot of pressure and will in turn improve his performances. Trahair’s final statistics for 1997 include averages of 11.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. For such a young player, Aaron already has an impressive list of accolades to his name. He was runner up to Sam MacKinnon in Rookie of the Year voting in 1994, averaging 5.4 ppg. He won a championship with the Wildcats in 1995, as well as a silver medal at the U/20’s World Championships the same year. At the U/23 World Championships in Melbourne in 1997, Trahair was one of Australia’s best players. In an elimination game, Aaron hit a three-pointer on the buzzer which allowed Australia to advance, and the team eventually won the gold medal. Aaron’s spot in the Kings line-up for 1998 is secure.
