Crocs Win Home Opener Against the Bullets

Posted: Sun Oct 11, 1998 at 10:12 AM ET

The Townsville Crocodiles withstood a strong game from Bullets superstar Steve Woodberry (31 points) to win their 1998/99 season opener 91-84 at the 'Swamp' (formely the furnace) in Townsville yesterday. The Crocs got the job done thanks to a very balanced attack. New import James Harper also fitted in well, scoring 14 points in his National Basketball League debut. The Crocs were always one step ahead of the visiting Bullets, who defeated the Canberra Cannons 24 hours earlier in Brisbane. The Bullets made their run in the fourth quarter thanks in large part to the fine play of M.V.P candidate Steve Woodberry.

Woodberry was the game high scorer, as he plundered the Crocs for 31 points. But it was not enough to lift his side to victory, Rob Rose hitting several key shots down the stretch taking the home side to a well deserved 91-84 victory. The Crocs maintained a good spread of scoring across the board, Sam Mackinnon and David Pennisi sharing the team high honours with 18 points a peice. Simon Kerle chipped in with 14 points, as did Clarence Tyson's replacement James Harper, and Rob Rose, playing in the point guard spot had 13 of his own. Leroy Loggins, playing with a hurt back scored 17 points in the match but import Thaddeous Delaney could only manage 13. Delaney is now under some serious pressure if he is to keep his job as the Bullets second import. Bullets coach Brian Kerle is looking for Delaney to lidt his game, but has some patience in the big man. "We know Thaddeous can do better, he's still finding his feet."
