Tigers Overpower Cannons Down the Stretch

Posted: Fri Oct 23, 1998 at 9:42 PM ET

The Melbourne Tigers improved to 3-0 with a confidence building 11 point win vs the Cannons at the AIS Arena tonight. The Tigers were expected to dominate and early on they did. The Tigers got rolling with a Timmons trey and then a spectacular alley oop from Gaze to Copeland. But the Cannons quicky reeled them back with a melvin Thomas bucket and a Damien Ryan bomb. The Cannons continued to shoot the ball well for the rest of the first quarter and only defensive lapses kept them behind. The Tigers up 24-23 at the first change. The second quarter was neck and neck from start to finish. Both teams managed 25 in the second, the biggest lead was 2 to Melbourne. Andrew Gaze was held to 4 points in the second quarter which made his half time tally 10.

The third quarter saw gaze quickly pick up his scoring with easy lay ups. Lanard Copeland also lit up as the Tigers threatened to blow it out. But some great outside shooting from Mike Mckay and rookie Damien Ryan kept it within reach, the Tigers going into the final change up 81-73. That was as close as it would get. Andrew Gaze and Lanard Copeland took over with some huge three point bombs. The Cannons meanwhile went cold from outside and found themselves down by as much as 16 in the middle stages of the final term. The Tigers closed the game out from the free throw line and the cannons didn't make an effort to rell them in. The final score was the Tigers 109, the Cannons 98. Andrew Gaze lead all scorers with 34 points and Lanard Copeland was also amongst the points with 29 of his own. For the home team Melvin Thomas had 28 and Damien Ryan was very impressive with a career high 23 points.
