Titans Roll Falcons

Posted: Fri Nov 13, 1998 at 9:52 PM ET

The Victoria Titans bounced back from their crushing defeat at the hands of the Wollongong Hawks with a 14 point humbling of the Newcastle Falcons. The Titans were due for a home win after the terrible loss to Wollongong, but early on they looked very shaky, Newcastle scoring the first 10 points of the match. But Victoria struck back with an impressive 9-0 run and took the lead soon after. The first quarter wasn't very attractive from then on, which suited the home side. The lead by 4 at quarter time and they strectched that lead early on in the second term. Jason Smith saw his first action of the game and made an immediate impact, finishing off 2 steals with big dunks. The Falcons meanwhile the Falcons were ice cold, only Pat Reidy managed to reach double figures with 12 at the half. The Titans, thanks to 12 points from Ben Pepper lead 54-40 at the main change.

The third quarter was a very frustrating one for the Newcastle Falcons. Every time they made a run and cut into the lead, the Titans hit back with quick and powerful runs to keep them at bay. Victoria then increased their stangle hold and pushed the lead past 15 in the latter stages of the third term. The Titans had the memories of last weeks fourth quarter fresh in their minds and when The Falcons quickly cut the lead to 7 the Titans began to tense up. The Falcons had Victoria right where they wanted them, with the ball and just a 7 point gap to make up. But a soft turnover and a three pointer from Tony Ronaldson let the Falcons off the hook. From then on the Titans made all the big plays and the Falcons couldn't buy a basket. The Titans kept up the defensive pressure even though they were winning by such a comfortable margin and they attacked the basket right to the end. They were rewarded on the scoreboard with a comprehensive 97-83 victory. Ben Pepper was the game high scorer with 17 points, Mike Kelly chimed in with 14 and Frank Drmic 13. For the Falcons Pat Reidy and Terry Johnson had 16 a peice.
