My Little Handful
The Best Mother's Day Present Ever
Was given to me 15 years ago
I was 30 weeks pregnant with my first child.
In the middle of the night, my water broke.
My husband and I were very scared
We called the doctor, He said he'd meet us at the emergency room at the hospital
After I was examined, I was told that my little one wanted to enter this
world of ours sooner then he was supposed to. My body was trying to go into labor, but it was too early
The doctor said I'd have to stay in bed with my legs up and try to keep this little package inside for a few more weeks.
Ten days later, on May 13th 1984 our first son, Geoffrey Kraig was born.
This day happened to be Mother's Day. He weighed in at 3lbs and only 13 ounces.
Oh God does work in mysterious ways, but what a precious little package my little one was, "My Little Handful."
The doctors all said that he was in grave danger, he might not survive. They kept him hooked up to all kinds of monitors.
He lived his first 10 weeks of life in an incubator in the intensive care unit
Each day that went by, he gained a little weight, not to much but enough that when he got to 5 lbs. We were able to take him home.
He was so tiny. We didn't know what was going to happen, but we decided
to take it one day at a time and do the best we could do for our baby.
We saw a so-called top Pediatric Neurologist who told us that Geoffrey was
Never going to achieve an intelligence level of more then a 3 year old
and that we should consider putting him in an institution.
He said that he would never be able to think or talk
Guess what my friends? Geoffrey proved him wrong
He is now a freshman at Mendham High School and doing great in school
He loves his classes and belongs to two after school clubs.
His interests include sports, cooking, and politics. He works very
hard after school everyday, either with his physical
therapist, occupational therapist, or his personal trainer.
He plans to attend college after graduation from high school.
Our life has not been an easy one, but I don't think anyone has it easy.
And if they tell you they do, they have to be lying. In the 15 years
Geoffrey has been with us he hasn't missed much in life. He has
also met some pretty special people Like Donald Trump, Walt Frazier,
Barry Bonds, David Cone, Don Imus, Bill Parcells, Yogi Berra just to name a few.
He sat on the Knicks bench at Madison Square Garden and even went
into their locker room. He has flown to 22 states and 4 countries.
So you see this is not a bored kid
We have another son who is 15 months younger then Geoffrey, is
also a freshman in high school. They get along just like any 2 brother's
so close in age. They fight like cats and dogs, but
on the other hand, they love each other and are always looking out
for the other. Geoffrey has a great quote and I try to share this
with others, and people that don't know him
"CP DOESN'T DEFINE WHO HE IS"
"FROM THE HEART OF MARY JANE"
I think the mother's story says it all, and over the years of all the parents
and the kids that have touched my heart, I have to say that this family has
really tugged at my heartstrings, and will never be forgotten.
Put here with Love MJ
Just a few more lines to let you know
how very special I think you all are
Jean hope you enjoy this page
Hey Geoffrey, want you to know
I just love rescuing you, you just make my
morning when you greet me that way
