A LITTLE ANGEL
This is a story that saddens me. A little girl a great big smile and heart to go with it. These kids have to be the warmest, loving and the most sensitive kids I've ever had the pleasure of working with. One winter day, I drove this little girl home and was unable to get her up to the door as I had done so many times before.
It had snowed and I was unable to get up her steep driveway, so from the bottom of the long driveway I blew the horn and blew it many times. You see, as a bus driver you're not allowed to leave kids in an unattended bus for obvious reasons.
I was also a new driver and I didn't know what I should do. So thinking I had to stay until someone got home to get this child I waited. I then did something I knew I shouldn't I got out and started up the driveway. It was rough and I slid and fell all the way up. Looking back at the van every few steps fear set in and scared something would happen I reached the door and rang the bell, I knocked and still nothing.
All was quiet. Finally the door opened just a crack and at first nothing was said. So I had to speak first and I said, "I have your daughter but I can't get her up your driveway." No answer at first, then she yelled something that just confused me even further. She wouldn't come out and she spoke with the chain still on to keep the door from opening too far she said she didn't want her daughter.
This was not normal. What could keep a parent from wanting their child? This was all new to me I was stunned and fear sets in what was I to do? I start back down the driveway and I reached the van and looking inside, the kids are ok yes I have one other little boy. I hear another yell I turn around and I look up it's her mother.
Oh good! I think she's coming for her daughter wrong again. She came out and told me to take her to someone, but of course I have no idea who or where she's talking about, so I asked who's that? She was mad because they hadn't plowed her street. You have to be kidding lady! What's that have to do with your daughter? Please come down and get her!
She goes back in and slams the door. Well I've been here too long, I have to get the boy home. I get to his house in tears and now I have to stop crying. I can't get emotional I have to get my head together. Ok! I ask if I could use their phone to call the Bus Company because surely they will know what to do.
Ok Bus Co what do I do? You have to take her to the nearest police station, what? Oh you're kidding! No that's what you have to do. Ok if that's what I have to do, I think I know where it is so I'll go now, but its up on a hill and I keep passing it and don't realize. I finally see it go in with this now tired, sleepy, warm hearted, beautiful smiling child, tell them what just happened and they tell me I'm at the wrong police station.
Now I'm really wasted. No not drug wasted, the emotional wasted. They just listened to my whole tearjerker of a story and I told it to the wrong people? They tell me where to go; I leave and yes I get to the right place. And guess what? The police here aren't surprised. They've seen this smile this little girl before. Mom does this all the time.
I'm a total wreck and they're not the least bit surprised. Mom does this all the time. You know I'd love to tell you this story has a happy ending and wait on second thought this ending can be seen two different ways. The little girl no longer lives with her mother. She is one of Gods little Angels and I'm quite sure very, very happy. I'd rather not say any more as I think this is the perfect ending to a very sad but yet happy story.
