My Romantic Evening
T'was the night before Christmas
And all thru the house Something Was Stirring
But It wasn't a mouse...
Home from our visit, Now some time just for us
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, Now lets light a fire
And show not a care, Instead make a memory we both can share
Stoke up that fire throw more logs on top
Cozy and warm Is how It would start, A memory was made One that won't be forgot
So nice to relax was our thought for the night
Came here in 99 to make a decision
Will I stay in NJ or come here to IL and Jim
He was alone, I was alone
We had just came to his house after spending Christmas
Eve at my sisters and his friends, His friend had given
him a really neat watch One til this day I don't know what happened too
Just before we sat down to set that watch
Jim got a few logs and lit them in the fireplace
Chilled some wine, and then we were going
to talk about both our futures
As we sat there so intent on setting that watch something was happening
and we were so unaware
My eyes started tearing and I sure couldn't say why
I looked toward the kitchen and that was a clue
could no longer see it through what looked like thick fog
Oh Gee how could that be? Fog indoors?
Then looked toward the fire place and thats when we saw
Smoke entering the room heading upward and over in all of the rooms
Before we could get to our feet the smoke had traveled
throughout the house
Coughing and gaging we opened the doors all of the windows,
and ran out on the lawn,
Good thing no snow, and It wasn't that cold.
what we didn't know was that some squirrels had built their
home in that chimney and caused us that mess
My question to Jim was what happened to the smoke detectors
Why didn't they sound, to warn us?
Were the batteries dead?
Jim you do have smoke detectors Right?
Oh yes! was his answer, So I said lets check them out
They weren't all working this was a fact,
Why? Was my question, Why didn't they work?
When Handed those detectors
I knew why they failed,
Not sure what went wrong, Jim decides to put out those logs
A word of warning "NEVER" pour water on smoldering logs
It made even more smoke then we already had.
We cleared out the smoke, And again tried to sit but the smell of those logs
We just couldn't bare
So off to my sisters, there was no smoke there
I could breath a bit better and reflect on that Eve
So up in smoke did our evening end
I'll go back to Jersey and forget about moving
Well that was late Dec. back in "99" and here I sit married in 2003
Moral of this story If you want to stay safe in case of a fire
Get them up and working! Not stored in a place
That way your romantic evening will be better remembered.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Night
