Let me start by saying that I hold a lot of importance in the names given to me by other people. It gives me insight into how close I am to that person, how important I seem to be to them, how well they know me, or how they see me as a person.
So, here's a list of my names, who gave them to me, what they mean, and anything else I can think to say about them. ^_^
Rebecca This is my given name. The name my parents gave me at birth. When I was born, the hospital had run out of pink blankets, so they wrapped me in a blue one.
When my parents asked my gender, the doctor just mumbled, so my parents had to actually check for themselves. But, at first they thought I was a boy (much to their chagrin, because they already had two boys)
and so they wanted to name me George (that's my dad's middle name). But then they found out that I'm actually a girl, so they wanted to name me Kimberly. Unfortunately, a woman around the corner from our house had just given birth
to a girl and named her Kimberly. So my parents decided on calling me Rebecca.
Becky While mom was still in the hopital, we had many visitors, including my proud grandparents. Mom and Dad explained that my name is Rebecca, but they were going to call me Becky. Of course my grandmother (on mom's side) noticed right away that
that would make my innitials "BS" and warned my parents that I'd get teased about it in school. (Looking back, I suppose I did get teased a little, but it actually worked out in my favour. ^_^)
This is the name that I grew up answering to (unless I was in trouble, of course... {eg})
Beck This name, I think, was just the product of laziness. ^_^ Apparently it was too much work to say two syllables, so my friends and family shortened it to just "Beck"
Bestest Buddy In The Land (or Buddy, or Bud) My friend Melissa calls me this. Although, actually, I was the one who started it. You see, she was in an exchange program with Germany and so she went and studied there for a few months.
Since she was my best friend I missed her terribly. We wrote often though, and in one I called her my 'Bestest Buddy in the Land' and commented on how English teachers everywhere were cringing. She wrote back calling me the same thing, and ever since then we've called each other "Buddy"
(Hey, you try calling someone "The Bestest Buddy in the Land" all the time and see how fast you shorten it! ^_^)
B-chan In highschool, I discovered a television show called Sailor Moon. And so I went on and on and on about it at school until I got my friend Wai-Lee hooked on it too. Then she discovered a show called Ranma 1/2. And that's how our little
anime 'hobby' started. Anyhow, in Ranma 1/2 there's a little pig called "P-chan". Well, ever since we saw that everyone had to be something-chan. So, I was B-chan, Wai-Lee was Y-chan, etc, etc... (note: some of our friends are particularily thrilled with this.
for example, J-chan, err.... Jay-sama ^_^). This is about the time where I got introduced to the internet.... and you know what that means.... a whole ton of nics! This was the first nic I used to chat with and to post to newsgroups.
After I had been chatting for a while with the name B-chan, I ran into a small problem. I think someone else was using that name, or whatever, but I was getting so rather odd comments. So, I thought, to solve that problem, I'd just change nics! ^_^
Here's the list of names I went through:
Inja, SailorPluto, HarmonWithStem, Setsuna, me, Weirdo, Lark, Lady_Lark, murasaki and probably some more that I just can't remember right now...
Finally, with the help of my Cyber-Brother, Ulrik, I settled on Neko.
Neko neko means cat in japanese. First off, I love anime, second, anime cats have to be the cutest animals around. That's how I thought of the name Neko in the first place. Then other things occured to me, like, I'm a Leo, which is a cat.
Cats always seem to land on their feet, and have that nine lives thing going, and I found that I've had a lot of luck in my life... I always seem to land on my feet no matter what happens. And a really important reason: it just stuck. It seemed like whenever I was Neko I was myself.
Neko-chan, Neko9, Nekochan, etc... These names were a result of someone else using my nic to chat with. TalkCity cleared that up by letting us register our nics. You probably wont find me chatting with any of these names. But, there are folks who call me Neko-chan.
They are my close friends in TalkCity. ^_^
