This was written Dave Scherer at 1wrestling.com, take this for what you will: As Daily Lariat readers will remember, Fullington’s contract with Extreme Championship Wrestling expired at the company’s 8/2 Heat Wave PPV. At that time, he briefly quit ECW in a salary dispute before coming to terms with Paul Heyman to work on a per diem basis, under the terms of his old contract. Despite what was reported elsewhere, Fullington never signed another contract with the New York based ECW.

While working dates for ECW, in which he repeatedly put over the young ECW star Justin Credible, Fullington was a well publicized free agent, able to consider offers from other companies. WCW contacted him and the sides were in serious negotiations, which were culminated when the sides agreed to a deal on 9/8.

Due to his current Extreme character in ECW, some wrestling observers sloughed off Fullington’s resignation from the company after the 8/2 PPV as simply a negotiating ploy. They pointed out that the fact that Sandman could never go to work for the Time Warner owned WCW, due to the fact that he could not take his gimmick with him. Others said that he could not go to the WWF due to the fact that his character was too similar to that of World Champion Steve Austin. Those people only considered part of the equation however, and were too quick to assume that neither of the big two would be interested in Fullington, which was obviously untrue. WCW realized that in addition to signing an established new wrestler, they are also took a key piece of ECW talent away. Fullington did not leave ECW for any other reason than he got a large raise in pay and was able to provide the kind of security that was important to him for his family. After working ECW style matches for the last five years, I think that even the most ardent ECW supporters would have to be fair and realize, and appreciate, all that the man did for the company, and for them, and realize that he paid his dues with his body.

There are no plans at present as to what Fullington’s gimmick will be in WCW. It could be a month or two before he debuts. But, he is now property of WCW and his ECW dates are completely fulfilled. He will not be appearing at any future shows for Extreme Championship Wrestling.

Efforts to contact Paul Heyman for comment were not successful.
