The Ancient History of the
Distinguished Surname
DeCarli

D e C a r l i

Lombardy in Northern Italy, was so named after the region where the Lombards first setted after their invasion of 568 AD. It is from this culturally rich region that the surname DeCarli originates.
Southern Italy at this time was occupied by the Byzantines. The Lombards have often been compared to the Goths, and their name may be derived from "Longobardi", which translates as "long beards".
They successfully integrated themselves into Roman civilization by adopting Roman language and culture. As a result of their complete integration, very little remains today of the ancient Lombardic culture.

Italy was invaded by the Franks in 754 AD and 756 AD and was subjected to the rule of the Frankish King Pepin.
Later, Charlemagne invaded Italy and in 774 AD Pavia, the most prominent city in Lombardy, surrended to his armies, and Charlemagne became king of the Lombards and Franks.

It was in this region that the first record of the name DeCarli was found in Milan, (formerly Milano, Mailand, Mediolanum (a city)), capital of the province of Milan.
The two palaces in the Piazza del Duomo, Palazzo Reale, and the palace of the archbishops are notable. The city is rich in art, museums, galleries and sights.
Castello Sforzesco stands in the Parco. In those ancient times only persons of rank, the podesta, clergy, city officials, army officers, artists, and landowners were entered into the records.
To be recorded at this time, at the beginning of recorded history, was of itself a great distincton and indicative of noble ancestry.

Variations in surnames occur because of spelling changes in written transcriptions and because of differences in local dialect.

The Earliest record found of this DeCarli lineage is in Milan where they were anciently seated.

From Emilia, where the first record of the family appears in the 10th through 13th centuries with the Latin form "Carolus", "Carlus", and "Carlonus", later records show the DeCarli family as an ancient Roman family of Milan.
The DeCarli family branched to Aquila, Cessna, Verona, and later Modena, where they held lands and estates.

Lezzeno is recorded in the 12th century.
Paltro of Cessna fought with the Roman army in the 14th century.
Giaffredi de Carlo Carli was senator and President of Milan from 1503 to 1524 AD.
Antonia and Giuseppe were confirmed in their nobility in 1777.

In the 6th century the DeCarli family was decorated for their efforts at Verona, and granted the lands and title of Counts of Verona.
From their early beginnings, for the next few centuries, the family name DeCarli also acquired other interests, as branches of ths fine old Italian family established themselves throughout Italy.
Many were displaced by the many conflicts of the time, the economics, or better opportunities, as they pursued religion, politics, or acquired better estates.

Lombardy came under the rule of Spain in 1535 after the death of Francesco Sforza, and Milan was given to Philip, the son of Emperor Charles V. High taxes were then imposed by the Spanish.

Spanish rule in Lombardy coninued until 1713, when the Austrian house of the Habsburgs took control of Lombardy from 1713 until 1796.
In 1796, Napoleon invaded Austrian Lombardy and conquered Northern italy. Napoleon controlled Lombardy until the Congress of Vienna in 1814. Austria then ruled the region until 1859, when an agreement between Count Camillo Benso di Cavour and the French Emperor was reached to free Italy from Austrian leadership.
It was at this time that Lombardy came under Italian rule.

Before the late 19th and early 20th centuries, very few Italians ventured to America, and until Italy's unification in 1861, emigration was limited.
The pattern of emigration changed rapidly from the 1880's onward.
In the census of 1880, there were forty thousand Italians in America, one thousand of which were living in or near New York.

Members of the DeCarli lineage arrived in North America during this period.
Many settlers were recorded from the end of the 19th century in the great immigration from Italy to the New World.
