NOVICE TOURNAMENT

at Forest Grove High School
You and your team are
invited to attend Forest Grove High School’s fourth annual Novice IE
Tournament, scheduled for September 22nd. The tournament will offer the
following events: Extemp, Impromptu, Humorous/Serious Interp, Poetry, Radio,
Expos, A.D.S., Prose, Original Oratory and Duo.
EVENT INFORMATION
Interpretation – 10 minute
max, no grace. Humorous and serious combined.
All entries should have a memorized introduction, but script or notes
may be used for the remainder of the speech.
Duo – 10 minute max, no
grace. All entries should have a memorized introduction. Character focus should
be primarily
offstage. Scripts are optional, and may be used.
Prose – 8 minute max, 30
second grace. All entries should have a memorized introduction. Script is
required, and must be referred to frequently. Limited gestures are permitted.
Poetry – 8 minute max, 30
second grace. A theme holds the selection of at least three poems together,
variation in poem
styles. Smooth and sensible
introduction and transitions.
After Dinner Speaking
(A.D.S.) – 6 minute max, 30 second grace. Humor in good taste. Speech should be
humorous
with serious undertone
coming through at end.
Impromptu – 5 minute max.
Well organized speech. Clear introduction and closure. Personal interpretation
of quote.
Radio Commentary – Must be
within 4:45 and 5:15 minutes. Multiple sources.
Expository – 8 minutes max,
30 second grace. Good visual aids, use of note cards permissible.
Original Oratory – 10
minutes max., no grace. Well written
and organized speech, persuading relative to a issue of current concern.
ENTRY LIMITS
Students may enter in up to
two events per pattern, but conflicts are the responsibility of the student.
AWARDS
Certificates will be awarded
to the first, second and third place finishers in all events. A hidden final
will occur after the first two
rounds to ensure the maximum
speaking opportunities for all speakers.

The following fees will apply to all entrants:

JUDGING
Each coach will be expected
to judge three (3) rounds. We will have many experienced judges on hand, but
would appreciate your judges as well. We would ask that you include the names
of your student judges with your invitation. We would also ask that you remind
your student judges to make only constructive comments on their ballots, so as
not to offend inexperienced speakers.
GEOGRAPHY
The tab room will be located
in room 1201. This is also where judges will pick up their ballots. Students
will gather in the cafeteria, which is also where awards will be held. The
“Coaches’ Room” is located off the cafeteria (please, adults only).
OTHER CONCERNS
Forest Grove High School is
a non-smoking campus for students and teachers alike, no smoking is permitted
anywhere on school
grounds. Students should plan to bring food or have
coaches do a food run for McDonald’s or pizza—nothing is in walking
distance. The tab room will be closed, and all
questions and concerns can be dealt with at an information desk located outside
the tab room. No boom boxes please, students using personal sound systems
should do so with head phones. Please
help us by cleaning up your area at the end of the tournament.

that it is received by Wednesday, September 19 at 4:00 pm (entries received
after that date
may be rejected). NO
ADDITIONS will be accepted after Thursday, September 24 at 5:00 pm.
