EXTRACT OF 6th
YEAR STUDENT’S WORK ON ALCA.
REASONS TO BE AGAINST ALCA:
- Negative
consequences on working people, the society and the environment itself.
-
The aim of ensuring
the freedom of capital will mean the decrease of salaries and the worsening of
working conditions.
-
The ALCA will expand
the rules of NAFTA over the monopoly of patents particularly in the
pharmaceutical area, with negative consequences over the prices of medicines
and the health of the population.
-
The rights given to
companies to offer services will bring about the privatization of public
sectors like Education and Health.
-
The elimination of
tariffs will threaten the disappearance of small national companies and it will
increase the desindustrialization of the economy.
-
Alca will constitute
an economic area from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego in the benefit of
multinational companies.
In our opinion, ALCA or FTAA is just another
opportunity for the USA to have control over our country and to dominate the
whole continent.
Under its terms, big companies are allowed to enter
our territory without any restrictions. This means that our industry will
suffer a severe blow since it won’t be able to compete with the overwhelming
power of multinational corporations.Besides, ALCA involves the decreasing participation
of the state in economic and public affairs giving the huge companies the
freedom to do whatever they want with our patents, legislation, and what is
even worse, our identity. That’s why our government should be concerned about
this situation and stand up for the rights of the Argentine society as a whole
rather than for the vested interests of a few countries.
