ABRAM AND LOT PART
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Abram went up from Egypt to the Negeb with his wife and possessions
and Lot.
Now Abram was very rich in cattle and silver and gold which
he had got.
And he journeyed by stages from Negeb to Bethel to where his tent
had been before
where he had built an altar to God, and Abram called on the name
of the Lord.
Lot, who was with him, also had flocks, and herds and tents, so the land
would not support them dwelling together and between their herdsmen,
this fanned
strife. And Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no strife between you
and me or our herdsmen, for we are kinsmen. Does not the whole land
lie before you?
Withdraw from me. If you go left, then I shall go to the right;
or if you take right, then I'll go left." Then Lot looked around
and his sight
fell on the whole region of the Jordan River toward Segor, well-watered,
and journeyed east.
Thus they separated from each other. Abram dwelt in Chanaan
and increased,
while Lot dwelt in the cities of Jordan, pitching his tent with Sodom
before
him. Now the men of Sodom were wicked, and sinned exceedingly
against the Lord.
The Lord told Abram after Lot had gone, "Raise your eyes, and from
where you are
now look to the north, south, east, and west. All the land there is,
for as far
as you can see, I will give to you and to your posterity, for all time.
I will make you posterity as the dust on the earth; if anyone can find
the way to count the grains of dust, then they your posterity
can count, too.
Arise, walk the length and breadth of the land, for I will give it to you."
Abram moved his tent and came to dwell in the land that God had
assured,
by the terebinths of Namre which are at Hebron; and he built and altar
there to the Lord.
