CHAPTER SEVEN
Then God said to Noah, "Go into the ark, you and all those
in your house;
for you alone in this generation have I found just - - - your wife
and your sons and their spouse.
Of all clean animals take with you of a male and its mate, seven pair,
and two pair of the mates of those unclean, and seven each of the birds
of the air
that they may raise offspring over the earth. For after seven days,
I will send
rain on the earth for forty days and nights till all living things end."
Noah did all God had commanded. He was six hundred years old
when the flood waters came onto the earth, and he took as he had
been told,
his wife and sons and their wives and they went together into the ark
to escape the waters of the flood. And the animals entered the ark
with Noah as God had commanded. And the waters came,
after seven days,
upon the earth, in the six hundredth year of the life of Noah this way.
On the seventh day of the second month, the fountains of the great
deep broke forth
and the floodgates of heaven were opened; and rain fell upon
the earth
for forty days and forty nights. But of all flesh in which was there
the breath of life had entered with Noah, male and female of each
in pairs
as God had commanded; and the Lord shut them in. The flood
continued for forty days
upon the earth. The waters increased and bore up the ark - - -
it was raised
above the earth. The waters rose higher and increased greatly
on the earth;
but the ark floated on the surface of the water with all life locked safe
in its berth.
And the waters rose higher and higher on earth so that the mountains
everywhere
under the heavens were covered that all that had been moving there
upon the earth died; birds and cattle, wild beasts, all creatures
that creep,
and all men - - - all that were on dry land died within the deep.
And every living thing on earth was wiped out, man to beast,
from the reptile to the birds of the air, from the greatest to the least
were wiped from the earth. Only Noah and those with him were left.
They
were safe in the ark. The waters rose on earth one hundred fifty days.
