CHAPTER NINE
God blessed Noah and his sons and said, "Be fruitful and multiply.
Fill the earth. The fear and dread of you shall be in the eye
of all wild animals on the earth and every bird of the air
and every creature on the ground and the fishes of the sea everywhere.
Into your power they are all delivered. Every creature shall be food
for you;
as I gave you the green plants. I give you all else, too.
But flesh with its life, that is, its blood, you shall not eat. Surely, I will
require an account of your life's blood - - - of every man that is killed.
Whoever sheds blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed
for in the image of God was man made; and you in the time ahead
shall be fruitful and multiply on the earth, its dominion I give onto you;
abound on the earth and subdue it, for it is yours to subdue."
Then God set a covenant with Noah and his sons, and with the beasts
that He would never again destroy all flesh by waters of flood
released.
And he pledged that as a token of the covenant He would set
His rainbow in the clouds at each storm that He might not forget.
And the sons of Noah went out from the ark and sons were born
onto each
from whom have descended all peoples as far as the earth does reach.
But one of the descendents of Ham was Chus, and Nemrod was his son;
a mighty hunter before the Lord, of conquerors, he was the first one.
NEMROD AND THE TOWER OF BABEL
FROM CHAPTER ELEVEN
The whole earth used the same language and all spoke the same speech.
The discovered a valley in the land of Sennaar while men were
migrating east.
And they settled there and they said to one another,"Come,
let us make bricks and bake them for stone and get bituman from
the ground to serve as mortar." Then they said, "Let us build
ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens; to seal
a name for ourselves lest we be scattered all over the earth."
The Lord came down to see the city and the tower and its worth
which men had built. And the Lord said, "Truly they are one people
and they
all have the same language. What they have done this way
is only the beginning of what they'll do. Hereafter, they will not
be restrained
from anything they determine to do. That they shall not so remain,
let us go down and there confuse their language so that they
will not understand one another's speech." So the Lord sent them away,
and scattered them from that place all over the earth; and they ceased
building the city. For this reason, it is called Babel, for this
was where the Lord confused the speech of all the earth. From there,
the Lord scattered them all over the earth, and they went forth
everywhere.
