ANDERSON, Ind. (July 29, 1998) -- There was a Peyton Manning sighting Wednesday in Anderson as the Colts' first-round draft pick made his first appearance at the Colts training camp.

Manning looked in shape and ready for his Colts debut. Although at first he overthrew a few passes, he began to look better later in the practice. He took a great deal of snaps, worked out in drills and even threw a pretty touchdown pass to Aaron Bailey during a two-minute drill.

"He looked good for his first day," Colts head coach Jim Mora said. "Physically he was okay, but mentally he looked great. He's obviously been studying his playbook."

Manning seemed excited and ready to take on the huge expectations that have been put on him.

"My goal is to be the best player I can be," Manning said. "I won in high school, I won in college, and I am looking forward to winning here."

Money isn't everything

Despite the hefty contract that actually got Manning into camp, he insists that the money isn't the most important thing to him.

"Mr. Polian and the Colts have paid me very generously to come in and play," Manning said, "but now this changes things. I'm going to have to start earning it and the only way to do that is by winning. I'm not getting paid for records, I'm getting paid to win."

Other notes

• Linebacker Quentin Coryatt was back in camp Wednesday, but did not participate in practice. Coryatt is bothered by sore pectoral muscles and will sit out several more practices.

• The added attraction of Peyton Manning brought 350 spectators to the Colts' practice field Wednesday. That is the largest single day total so far for training camp.
