Clark Gives Manning Fits

ANDERSON, Ind. (Aug. 5, 1998) -- Defensive back Rico Clark just seemed to have Peyton Manning's number Wednesday during the morning practice. Clark picked off two of Manning's passes despite the wet and soggy conditions.

But not wanting to use the fact that the ground was soggy as an excuse, Clark picked off another of Manning's passes during the drier, but mosquito plagued afternoon practice.

"It's just practice," Clark said, "but this team has a great secondary. There is a lot of depth at that position."

Clark, a second-year defensive man out of Louisville, spent the 1997 season mostly on the Colts practice squad before being waived. Clark is trying to get a more permanent position with the team.

"I'm trying to solidify a position on this team," Clark said. "I've got a lot to prove. We all just come out here and play hard."

Colts are receiver happy

Rookie wide receiver Jerome Pathon has been working with the first team in formations during practice. Pathon, who has been making several difficult passes since he has been in camp, is competing for a roster spot at a position where the Colts are filled to the brim.

"We have a lot of competition at that position," said head coach Jim Mora. "Basically it is a young group. I think, though, that it will be a good group."

Speaking of receivers ...

Wide receiver Freddie Scott gets the nod for the play of the day, not once but twice. During the morning practice Wednesday, Scott made two acrobatic catches off of two long Peyton Manning passes while being surrounded by defensive backs.
