 | SENATOR BEVERLY
HOLLINGWORTH Senator Beverly Hollingworth is a Democrat in her fifth term representing District 23. She holds the leadership position of Democratic Leader, and serves as Vice Chair of both the Finance and Rules Committees. Midway through her fourth term in the Senate, Beverly Hollingworth succeeded the late Clesson J. Blaisdell, Jr. as Senate President, becoming the second woman to serve as President of the Senate in the history of New Hampshire. Senator Hollingworth was first elected to the Senate in 1990 after representing her hometown of Hampton for ten years in the House of Representatives. The owner and operator of a hotel and restaurant at Hampton Beach, her experience as a critic of the construction of Seabrook Station and a patient advocate at the New England Medical Center drew her into politics and government. In the House, Hollingworth served on the Judiciary Committee while winning a reputation for her mastery of issues associated with energy, healthcare and insurance. Her legislation establishing an immunization program for children, in partnership with the insurance industry, has become a model emulated by other states. She led efforts to introduce "living will" legislation and to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a state holiday. As a freshman senator in 1991, Hollingworth contributed to the success of the economic development program pursued by the Senate to overcome the most severe recession to strike New Hampshire since World War II. By her second term, she was applying her experience to achieve major reforms of health insurance and workers compensation as well as play a key role in the budget process. In 1994, a Republican landslide interrupted Hollingworths career in the Senate, which resumed with her election to her third term in 1996. Although Republicans still held a commanding majority in the Senate, Hollingworth played an effective role in furthering initiatives to expand access to public kindergarten, lower costs of health insurance and hasten reduction of electric rates. Re-elected in 1998, Hollingworth was among the most experienced members of the first Democratic majority returned to the Senate since 1912. As Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, she played an important part in the effort to resolve the school funding issue and was the principal architect of the Senate budget which, in an unprecedented turn of events, was endorsed by the House without amendment. Hollingworth has long been a civic and business leader in the Town of Hampton, serving as President of the Hampton and Seacoast chambers of commerce as well as on the board of Seacoast Hospice. This year the New Hampshire Trial Lawyers Association honored her with the Civil Justice Award for her contributions to enhancing and sustaining the American civil justice system. Hollingworth has four children and three grandchildren. She and her husband, Dr. William Gilligan, Vice-President of Emerson College in Boston, live in Hampton. | ||||||||||
