Gary Oldman Tires of Villain Roles
Just in case you were wondering, Gary Oldman took his role in Lost in Space with his nine-year-old son in mind. "This is the first movie I've ever made that my kid [Alfie] can go and see," says Oldman, who plays the evil Dr. Zachary Smith in the family-oriented sci-fi flick. "I'll take him to the Cinerama Dome and he'll watch Dad doing his thing."
But the screening of the critically ravaged Lost in Space might not be all that Dad had hoped. Oldman fears that during the film, little Alfie will "turn to me and say, 'What's going on?' And I'll say, 'I haven't the faintest idea. It has something to do with time.' But I don't know about time . . . not enough time [was spent] working on the script."
After punching the clock as over-the-top villains in the big-budget extravaganzas Air Force One, The Fifth Element, and now Lost in Space, Oldman is well aware that he's been typecast in Hollywood. "Last week, four villain [roles] were offered to me," he chuckles. "Dreadful—and the money they wanted to pay me! It reflects the limited imaginations of the people offering me the roles."
The actor promises that his voice work in the upcoming animated musical Quest for Camelot will be his last evil outing for a while. "I've put that villainy completely to bed."
