So you're here, and you're asking yourself, "Why should there be a website for sexual-minority college students?" Well, I covered a lot of that on the first page, but now we'll get more personal.
When I was in high school, I was out to a select group of friends, and that was all I needed. But when I got to college, I wasn't out to anyone, and I felt completely isolated and alienated from the world. For a full semester, I wasn't having any fun at school at all.
I got involved with the theater, and was in a show called Leader of the Pack and at the cast party, a few of the older, wiser cast members thought I was gay, so they asked me. Suddenly, I was out, sort of. There were even a couple of other gay people in the show with me. So a few people knew, but not my close friends
Then something horrible happened: my roommate accidentally read an e-mail from a guy I was seeing at home. Surprisingly, he dealt with it really well (especially surprising since we hated each other deeply at the time-we've become friends since, we just can't live together). By the next semester, I was out and proud, and felt much better about myself.
But there are some things that you just can't talk about with straight people, because they don't understand. There some things they can't talk about with gay people because WE don't understand. I would search and search and search for other gay people, but couldn't find any…or at least, I didn't know what I was looking for.
Eventually, I came across gayteenresources. I was 19 at the time, so I joined their mailing list. I'm still a regular poster, but I found myself in the same situation with the teenagers on the list that I do with my gay teenage friends in real life. Going to college drasticly changes one's existance, and, having not expirienced that yet, many of the posters don't understand what I say, and I'm so far removed from their situations that I don't understand either.
So I created the gay_college@egroups.com mailing list. And thinking that I would like to have a web site to go with my e-group, I came up with this.
And I am a greedy bastard with a great love of money, so I'm permitting paying advertisers to post up here. Sorry anyone who thinks that I should do this out of the goodness of my heart, but YOU try living for a summer on just a workstudy job and THEN tell me that I'm wrong.
Anyway, so that's the why. Enjoy the site.
