Mark Martin wins Busch series Coca-Cola 300

March 27, 1999 10:08 PM EST

FORT WORTH, Texas (Ticker) -- Mark Martin extended his NASCAR Busch Grand National series win total to 36 and gave car owner Jack Roush his 200th career victory when he captured the rain-shortened Coca-Cola 300 at the Texas Motor Speedway today.

Martin was awarded his second win of the season and his second at the Texas Motor Speedway when NASCAR officials stopped the race after 163 of the 200 scheduled laps. Rain showers on four occasions delayed the start from 1 p.m. EST to shortly after 3:30 p.m.

"I look at it as a bunch of circumstances," Martin said. "It could have easily gone some other way today. Last year and the year before, it was a matter of having a good program, being in position and having things work out for you."

Jeff Burton, a Winston Cup teammate of Martin's at Roush Racing, finished second to give Ford the top two spots, and also took over the Busch series points lead from Matt Kenseth, 808-800. Burton won last week's NASCAR TranSouth Financial 400 at Darlington Raceway in similar fashion when that race was stopped after 164 laps.

The Chevrolets of Jeff Green and Mike McLaughlin were third and fourth, respectively, while Kenny Irwin's Ford rounded out the top five finishers.

Kenseth led a large portion of the race before spinning on the grass and out of contention on lap 142. He started fifth and ended 18th after the incident.

Pole sitter Dave Blaney placed eighth.

Jeff Gordon, making his second Busch series start of the season, placed 13th. Gordon, who has committed to five Busch series starts this season, started fourth and was among the leaders until a late incident featuring several cars forced him to drop back.

Next Saturday's BellSouth Mobility 320 at Nashville Speedway in Tennessee is the next stop on the circuit.
