I'm
just going to review the 2 shows I attended. If someone was at the gigs
held in Madrid, Alicante, Ponferrada and Oviedo and want to review them,
please drop us a line.
October 31, Friday.
We take the train to Castellón even thought the Surfin' Lungs first
gig was going to happen in Valencia and on Saturday. We decided to travel
on friday so we could hang out with the british, have some beers and go
dancing at the Voodoo. And suddenly...Surprise!. Shock Treatment were playing
that night at Voodoo.
Before going to Voodoo we went to Ricoamor where the Surfin' Lungs were swallowing countless beers like typical brits on vacation. It seems like the pub's owner phoned desperately the beer supplier when he saw Steve crossing the door ha ha ha!.
Shock Treatment estuvieron impecables. Yo creo que fue uno de los mejores conciertos que les he visto. Cómo no, les dedicaron un tema a los ‘Lungs. Pic:Jose (Shock Treament) at Dr. Slump
November
the 1st, Saturday
We pack our things and go enroute to Valencia. It was a great relief leaving behind the stinkiest hostal in town!. You know, air was something like 80% dust and 20% oxygen. You could catch cancer at the bathtub if you dared to put your bare feet there! And the rooms... Well, if you're planning to go to Castellón gimme a call I'll give you some advice about where you DO NOT have to sleep.
Once in Valencia we do a little tourism and head to the venue, Matisse,
to see the soundcheck. The venue was great. SO great that there was something
funny about it. It was all very modern and "in", you know?.
Suddenly, the pub's employees started to ask the band to hurry up because
the first afternoon customers were entering the bar. And all of a sudden
some tangos come through the PA system and a horde of old men & ladies
start dancing tangos all over the dance floor!!! Hilarious is the word!.
Before the gig we went to have supper. Advice: going to a bar with a bunch
of british bean-eaters sucks! Every single tapa seemed like "little monsters
in sauce" to them.
The Matisse gig was s-u-p-e-r-b!- The venue was full because the entrance was free. All of us who were there to see the band went for the first rows and big party started to happen. They played all their best hits. People was going crazy over them, dancing, shouting and singing along!.
When "Beach Bound" started that became apotheosic! There were some weird figures stuck on the walls, and they flew by the middle of the set. The crowd was dancing with them, throwing them in the air and one even got to do some "playback" singing onstage! There was even slam dance over the crowd's heads just like improvised surf!
They also played a whole bunch of songs that weren't included on their first spanish tour set list. For example: “Girl Trouble”, “Jimmy’s Pad”, “That Special Summer”, “Surf-Jet Girl” o “Spirit of Australia”.
After the show we went dancing to a club named Kara Kapila (closed a year ago, by the way...) and then went to sleep. The whole thing had been really weakening.
November the 2nd, Sunday
We left Valencia behind with a great feeling. And nobody made fun of us for being from Barcelona! ;-)
Back in Castellón it started raining. It seems like rain accompained
the rest of their tour.
When I arrived at the Ricoamor the soundcheck had just started. Once all the little technical problems were solved, Shock Treatment appeared and the thing ended up being a rehearsal to arrange the cover versions that they were going to record the next day for a split EP project named "Surf Treatment". It was great!
I could check the creation process of the harmony vocals, something I had been expecting for a looong time. For what I saw and heard the collaboration is going to be astonishing. It seems like No Tomorrow is gonna release the 4 songs by the end of 1998.
Shows at the Ricoamor start at 8:00 p.m. so they decided to stay at the venue until it was time to go onstage. I went for a short meal and found weird to see a gig in the daylight.
Things started out more quietly than usual. Mind that it was a Sunday. Everyone had something to do the next day (working or attending classes), so I think that everybody enjoyed the gig as much as I did, but way more quietly and intimate.
The show started with the usual starting songs, but suddenly new jewels started to sound. Songs that weren't played before. "The Beach Will Never Die", "I dreamt about her friend" (they said that they had never ever played that song live), "New Girl In School", "Jimmy's Pad", "Surf Jet Girl", "Girltrouble", "Go Lil' Surfer" etc...
They had to do 3 encores ("Let's dance" cover included) due to the public's response. We were about 100 people inside the venue (it was fully packed), so went nuts when once again an improvised Shock Treatment & Surfin' Lungs gig.
Here you are
the st-list:
And that was it. Personally I think that the Matisse concert must have been one of the wildest shows they have ever played.
After loading the van and, most difficult, talking Steve off going for
some drinks, we went for supper.
From these lines I want to thank Javi No Tomorrow and his wife Maite the courtesy of putting me up for the night at their home. Remember the horror hostal where I was supposed to be staying if I wasn't lucky enough to find somewhere else?
The next morning they woke me up playing the FEEDBACKS album real loud.
It seems like they tried to wake me up several times with more common methods,
but all of them failed. Javier's coucj is pretty comfortable and I am really
hard to wake up... ask my mum!
After spending all of my money at No Tomorrow's headquarters, the band kindly walked me to the railway station, where the last surprise of the trip was going to happen.
Since a long time ago, I wanted to get their Christmas' 4 songs tape. It was given to me as a gift before going back to Barcelona inside of a huge red envelope. After wishing them the best luck for the rest of their tour, I finally left.
Once in the train on my way to Barcelona I wanted to open the envelope but there was a note reading "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL CHRISTMAS"!!!. So I had to wait until the 24th of December to enjoy my gift. I promise I DID wait, and as soon as I got home handed the envelope to my mother and told her not to give it to me until Christmas even if I'd have a nervous breakdown. And know what? It was worth it!
