From the Odell Estate Papers.   Camp Pain, August 30 1836 written by Christian C. Elkins-From Alisa Hardman from the researchings of Wilma McGarry Smith: Dear Cuzzon I take the pleasure to inform you that we are all well at present and hope thse lines may find you all well. We are stationed three miles south of Roses (Rosses) Ferry under the foot of Brinards Ridge in the Cherokee nation. We have got plenty for our selves and plenty for our horses to eat and we are all satisfied. I swapped the mare that I started on at the Boatyard and got a very fine horse and gave thirty dollars to boot and then I swapped with Charles P. Shelly/Shelby at Athens and gave him fifteen and now I have the finest horse you ever seen. Daniel's mare got bad hurt but is getting better.

Father (Larkin) swapped his horse that he started on and got twenty dollars to boot. I don't think that we will have anything to do. I expect you hear a great deal of news which is not so. We expect to know in a few days whether we will have to go to Arkansas or not. The treaty will be in a few days and then we will know our doom. We haven't drew onpay yet but we expect to draw the 7th of next month. I want you to read this letter to Mother and tell her not to be uneasy for we are all well and hope these lines may find her in the same state of health. Thell her that as soon as I am discharged I will come home and I will wait on her like a son ought to do. Give my best respects to Andrew Odell and tell him to attend to the girls until I return. Give my respect to all the friends I heard that you had several weddings since I left home. I don't want you to let all the girls marry before I get home. Give my best respect of Nathan Morrell's family. Daniel (brother) sends his best respects to all of the girls. Jessee B. White sends his best respects to you all also. Elcaney Millard sends his best respects to you all. Timothy Millard sends his best respect to you all. I want you to write as soon as you get this letter and write how all of the friends is and mother and family is. Tell Alfred Millard that I want him to write to me as soon as he can. Some more at present but remember your friend until death.

Signed Christian C. Elkins.
