PLANE CRASH 9/12/99 1:30PM

AIR SHOW TRAGEDY. What was supposed to be a fun and thrill-filled Sunday celebrating North Adams' Harriman-West Airport's 50th birthday turned into a shock-filled crash site, leaving many wondering about the adequacy of safety precautions at such events. Spectators saw two Cessna airplanes crash into each other shortly after taking off at 1:30 p.m. and then fall to the earth. A third plane nearby avoided the collision. Pilots George Shelton of Brighton and Paulus Kraaijvanger of North Stonington, CT, were pronounced dead at the crash scene.
