Ovatec

Ovatec was invented by Mr. Les Smith about 15 years ago to solve breeding problems with his herd of palomino horses and neighboring herds of dairy cattle.  It has been known for some time (by high-level university research) that the ion and chemical balance of the vaginal tract varies very predictably over the normal female cycle.  Les took it upon himself to design and test a measuring device to be able to follow the cycle electronically.  He eventually developed prototype versions of the Ovatec which were given to the universities for study.   He continued refining the Ovatec design over the years.  The university reports began coming back.  Their findings were, not only did the Ovatec work, but it could also be used as a very accurate test for selecting the optimum time to breed for either male or female offspring.

The principle of operation is that a uniquely designed probe is inserted into the vaginal tract on a minimal daily basis (more often as the ovulation peak approaches).  The small computer attached to the probe measures extremely small changes in the ion and chemical composition of the mucus in the vaginal tract.  The computer then provides a numeric readout that is recorded on a chart by the operator.  Over the female cycle, the readings are relatively stable until ovulation approaches a very detectable dip.  Ovulation occurs at the trailing edge of the dip.  Sex of the offspring depends heavily upon which side of the dip breeding occurs.  By knowing which side of the dip the female is on you can allow breeding in a controlled environment (or by AI) and have a MUCH higher success rate of sex choice (in university studies on cattle, the success rate was over 90 percent).

Recent university studies have also added to the Ovatec's uses.

During the flat part of the female cycle (when ovulation is not occurring), it has been discovered that erratic readings are strongly correlated to infection or bacterial problems in the vaginal tract that normally can only be detected when a vet obtains samples and does lab testing.

Another study has established a strong correlation between after breeding Ovatec readings and the sex of the fetus (in single fetus situations), thus allowing the breeder to predict the sex of the unborn fetus.

The price for Ovatec is $2,495.00 plus shipping and handling.  Ovatec comes with a 3-year warranty on components and workmanship.  When the investment in the Ovatec is spread over several years and the effect that Ovatec can have on your breeding program is considered, it is easy to see that Ovatec pays for itself month after month after month.  Ovatec comes with a choice of probe size—large for horses and cattle—medium for mini-horses and mini-cows—small for hogs, sheep, goats, and dogs.  Please specify size desired at order time.  Optional extra probes are available and can be easily attached to your single computer unit.
