NAAFA (National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance) honored SCSAC with an Honorable Mention Award at their recent convention in New Orleans. The award was bestowed for our efforts of educating the public through our website and the candlelight vigil held in memory of Patricia Mullen.
The World Wide Web is an exciting new vista that can spread the message of the Size Acceptance Movement to people throughout the world. Hans Hornstein has spent many hours in authoring and maintaining our website. His latest efforts include incorporating our newsletter and events calendar into the pages with the assistance of our newsletter editor, Jill Bingham.
The Candlelight Vigil was held for many reasons. We couldn't restore Pat Mullen's dignity, but we could honor her memory; we wanted to make a statement as an act of solidarity for our fat sisters and brothers who marched in Chicago that day; but, most of all, we held it as a means of healing after this horrific event that rocked the fat community to its core. It was Pat who experienced our worst nightmares, but it could have very easily been any one of us. Kimberly Moore, a SCSAC and NAAFA member, deserves the recognition for inspiring us to hold this service.
This recognition is particularly gratifying because it was given in the same spirit that SCSAC was founded; size acceptance organizations working together towards a common goal. Congratulations, and keep up the good work!
