The Wide Angle - December 1997/January 1998 |
The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance-Activism Chair Jody Abrams announced that at the 1998 National NAAFA convention, being held July of 1998 in Los Angeles, plans are being made for an exciting activism event. Billed as the Million Pound March, Ms Abrams is calling for other size rights organizations to join NAAFA and participate in this event. This is sounding like it is shaping up to be a wonderful opportunity to do some in your face activism and is sure to draw some media attention.
SCSAC members are being invited to contact Hans Hornstein VP Activism or any board member if you are interested in joining this event as a group and showing our support.
Three cheers for 20th Century Fox Entertainment for their positive portrayal of fat people in the new animated feature Anastasia. Not only do they show fat people in a positive light, they also portray one of the female characters as being fat and desirable. This is a welcome change from most animation that seems to be have pigeon holed fat people to roles of evil or stammering fools.
Recently there has been an outbreak of violence in our schools aimed at or perpetrated by fat children. This is an alarming trend. Some children are taking their own lives or the lives of others in desperation. Teachers and adults seem helpless to intervene for fat children when classmates are abusing them. Concerned SCSAC members are working on a project to help inform and educate teachers and school officials in making schools a safe environment for fat kids. We have formed a committee and are in the stages of planing a curriculum to be presented to the school board
Are you interested in making our schools a safer place for children of size? Do you have stories to share that will help us to direct our focus? Please consider joining the committee. We need everyones input.
