1949 Dodge Coronet
1949 Dodge Coronet four door sedan
My Grandfather bought this 1949 Dodge Coronet new in Afton, Iowa, after Dad rolled the 1946 Hudson Super Six. It has a flathead six and a fluid drive transmission. The original color was a metallic green. Dad once told me that you could start out in high gear with fluid drive.
My Dad dated my Mom in this Dodge(the only vehicle Dad owned at the time was a 1951 Dodge 2 ton truck so he used his Dad's car for socialzing). She can remember many terrifying high speed rides in this car. One of Dad's high school clasmates told me that, "It didn't matter what color of car your Dad drove in high school because all you could see was a streak!"
One story Dad told me about the Dodge was that he was on his way home from town with a trunk full of groceries. It was icy that day and he was driving too fast (his norm then but there were no speed limits on the open road in Iowa then). He came over a hill and lost control, went spinning into the ditch. In the process the trunk popped open spewing groceries all over the place. Dad picked up the groceries and drove the car out of the ditch. Grandpa would have never known about the ditching if he had not noticed the grass sticking out of the hubcaps.
Being on the subject of ditching cars, this is also the first car I put in the ditch. I was standing on Grandpa's lap steering the Dodge as we drove down the long lane on our farm. I did fine until we came to a sharp curve and I could not get the steering wheel to turn enough to make the turn. I remember my grandpa's laughter as we slowly rolled into the ditch. He backed it out and we continued on our way with grandpa at the wheel. It is one of the few memories I have of him as he died when I was three and a half years old.
