What Principles Bond Sigma Women?
- Scholarship
- Service
- Leadership
- Sisterhood at it's Best
The history of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., dates from November 12,
1922. Seven feisty young teachers, fed up with the isolation of
segregation, founded a BLACK sorority at predominantly WHITE Bultler
University in Indianapolis, Indiana. Most Black Greek-letter
organizations were founded on Black college campuses, in a supportive
social climate. Sigma Gamma Rho did not have the advantage of such
support. That in itself is special and makes for a unique brand of
Sisterhood. Our founders had to fight for their place in history.
In a time when education for African Americans was difficult to
attain, the Founders of Sigma Gamma Rho became educators. They
believed that the self respect, knowledge, and discipline
gained through study would help individuals to recognize their duty
and responsibility for their society.
Mission Statement
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority's aim is to enhance the quality of life
within the community. Public service, leadership development and
education of youth are the hallmark of the organization's programs
and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho addresses concerns that impact
society educationally, civically, and economically.
