Morning's Song

by Sara Signore

Another winter morning

dawns the first gray streaks of light

illuminate the hillside

now blanketed in white

i pull my robe around me tighter

warding off december's chill

and lay a steaming mug of coffee

to rest upon the window sill

with a gentle sigh i turn my gaze

from the quiet, snow-covered land

and focus on the photograph

clutched tightly in my hand

the playful smiles radiating

from the faces as i stare

remind me of our affection

and the feelings that we share

still conscious of the sunlight

glaring off the silent snow

i close my eyes and turn my thoughts

to mornings not long ago

the sun was not so blinding

then the air not quite so cold

when beside you i'd awaken

to a happiness untold

the tender way you held me

as your fingers stroked my hair

the gentle way you kissed me

and whispered in my ear

the bed we shared is so empty now

as i cry myself to sleep

heart, mind, and body aching for you

as i lie, alone, and weep

i know the day will come, love,

when we'll no longer be apart

but until then i vow to hold

a place for you in my heart

a silent tear drop escapes

as i open up my eyes

reawakened to the morning

by a distant bird's sorrowful cries

slowly sipping my coffee

i notice that the snow

has once again begun to fall

and the winds have started to blow

another winter's morning dawns

the frigid air filling with snow

it finds me lonely, cold, and missing you

more than you'll ever know.
