Anime in Europe by Mousse

In contrast to North America, Japanese Anime and Manga are very 
difficult to obtain in European countries. Maybe it is because of the 
lack of any major Japanese immigration that the Japanese culture in 
the Old Continent is not very well known... let alone the modern Otaku 
environment. Some channels HAVE taken a chance though and screen a few 
of the more mainstream Animes in dub.

In France, the station TF1 has gained fame for bringing Anime to 
Europe... Starting with Cpt. Harlock, it's child's Program Hour 
(called Club Dorothee) featured many of the better anime series like 
Dragonball and Dragonball Z, Ranma 1/2 and Sailormoon (of course !) 
but also the grimmer series like Fist of the North Star and Saint 
Seiya... and THEN the parents jumped in....

Sailormoon was deemed indecent (the Uranus and Neptune 'case'), as 
well as Ranma 1/2 (Shampoo's tendency to hop around buck naked) and 
Dragonball Z, Saint Seiya and FOTNS had too much blood in it... so the 
channel was heavily critisized because they dared to send it in prime 
time... and they made the mistake to change the hour... For a while, 
the interest in Anime wavered... until the arrival of the great Akira.

Akira brought Anime to the wider audience... and launched the first 
wave of commercialisation of the video tapes. Manga Entertainment 
almost had the monopoly of Anime in the German, English and Dutch 
speaking communities of Europe and THEY chose wich animes were made 
available. Some of these were good, but there was a LOT of rubble in 
the lot.

Things changed when other (smaller) companies started releasing lesser
known, but more interesting series. Kiseki brought us Macross and the
notorious Urotsukidoji, ADVision brought us rare gems as Dragon 
Half... Most movies were dubbed, and subs were few and far between 
(Dragon Half being on of them) but things REALLY started moving when 
the French company Tonkam, who only distributed SECAM before, threw 
itself on the PAL market just a few months ago.

All of a sudden, Anime fans were diluded with subbed masterpieces like
Video girl Ai, Ah my Goddess and Evangelion. Prices collapsed as 
production costs of Tonkam (whose main business activity is actually 
Printing) were only a fraction of the so-called larger companies.

These days, the European consumer who's stuck with a non-SECAM 
non-NTSC old PAL vcr is no longer a slave of the whims of tv-channels 
and/or large coorporations, but is free to chose from a collection 
that keeps growing every week.... only problem is that an at least 
passive knowledge of at least 3 languages (english, french and to a 
lesser extent german) is imperative to find the one anime u've been 
looking for....
