Sandra's Sanctuary Christanity and Recovery Page

Christanity and Recovery

Dealing with Christanity during recovery can be very difficult. As a whole we are taught that God is this being who will punish us severely if we make a mistake. We are taught that he is cold and uncaring. Nothing could be farther from the truth. God is loving a caring. He does not punish us. He does not make horrible things happen to us because we sin. He disciplines but he does not punish. He is full of love and compassion. The problem is alot of "Christains" are not. As survivors we are often left feeling shamed and judged by Christains. We are often told it was our fault because we were "bad" or because we were not living right or some other thing. None of this is true. I am building this web page because I want to share some of what I learned as I walk through my spiritual healing as well as healing from rape and abuse. I walked away from God for a long time because of what I was told by well meaning "Christains" then I started seeing a Christain counselor and she helped me understand some things.

Why Did This Happen?

Why does God let horrible things happen? The answer I have chosen to follow is that he does not let it happen it kind of just happens. See God created us with freewill. That is what seperates us from the rest of creation. He gave us the free will to do good or to do evil. Unfortunately he cannot make us do good nor can he intervene to prevent us from doing bad. If he stopped all the evil being done to people around the world then there would be no freewill. If there is no evil there is no good. He cries when evil is done just like we do but he cannot stop it.

Punishment or Discipline

Punishment or Discipline? I believe God disciplines but does not punish us. He loves us. We all know there are consequences for some things we do. God will not suspend those consequences but he never makes evil things happen to us because of something we have done. I have had to learn to deal with alot of guilt and shame and am still dealing with it spiritually. I just know that God loves me even if noone else does and sometimes that makes it easier to keep fighting. I hope that it will help you to keep fighting too.
