Notes: A heavyweight mekton designed primarily for heavy combat and assault missions. The Orion skimps on other weaponry in favor of its main armament, a pair of heavy liquid-propellant cannon. Liquid propellant was chosen over the usual rail gun arrangement for better efficiency, power and intimidation (since the hypervelocity shells are propelled from the barrel on twin columns of flame). The twin cannon can also be replaced with mission specific armaments or completely omitted, reducing take-off mass in the latter case by seven to fourteen tons and in the former case by anything up to that. Because the MS-47’s armament is optimized for long-range fire, its short-range munitions are limited to a one-handed beam carbine (which can, if necessary, be replaced by a larger two-handed beam rifle or augmented with a one-handed energy melee weapon in the other hand). Because of the poor response time of a mekton this large, the EMW option is seldom utilized. The relatively low mass was achieved by removing the traditional secondary armaments and concentrating exclusively on the carbine and shoulder cannon.

The Orion won out over more the traditional heavy assault robots, YMS-46 Archer and the YMS-48 Phalanx, since its humanoid design allowed it to have a certain amount of weapons commonality with the units it would be working cooperatively with in the field. The second and greatest advantage for the Orion over its competitors was the fact that it was a single-pilot mekton, rather than a multi-crewed unit, allowing an Orion unit to operate on one-third the manpower of a conventional assault-mekton unit. The relatively low cost of the prototype allowed the unit to be the first New Generation Mekton to reach the battlefront.
