In the previous time; the men carried elk horn purses. Inside they stored dentalium and other valuable items. To make these purses; the would find a suitable section of elk horn antler, hollow the inside out and finish the exterior. They would then apply a scrimshaw design. A design is carved into the outer finish of the horn and then ink is applied to the carved area. This process is called scrimshaw. George Blake has been instrumental in reviving this traditional form of art.
