Frontiersman of Tomorrow. The stories that have been written about the frontiersmen of the past are still a source of interest to many young people. These men and women scanned the horizon as far as they could see, but it was the things which could not be seen, the great unknown beyond, which drove them on to the new lands which lay ahead to be discovered.
Today's pioneers do not have the lands of the West to explore, but perhaps they have a more challenging frontier in the ever-expanding horizon of science. Science has played a major part in shaping the present world we live in. Most scientists believe that its influence will be even greater in the years to come.
Although scientists have solved many problems in helping to develop our present high standard of living, they know that they have only begun. There are many, many things which they do not know and many new problems which are constantly being discovered. This means that science is an expanding frontier and that in the future there will be a need for many well-trained young people to work at the many jobs it will create.
The pioneer spirit is just as much alive in boys and girls today as it was long ago. It does not die. Young people are keenly interested in exploring and discovering. There is always tomorrow to think about. Tomorrow is the Unknown. Perhaps you may be one of tomorrow's explorers who will discover the answer to some of the secrets of science and have a hand in the shaping of the future.
Over the years science has offered many challenging and different career opportunities for boys and girls. These opportunities will be even greater when you are ready to graduate from college. Somehow girls have always thought that science was a man's world. However, this is no longer true for many young women are now finding interesting careers in science, mathematics, and engineering.
Perhaps the most important decision that you will make in your lifetime is in choosing your career. If you begin early, you can make a most interesting exploration of collecting evidence upon which you finally make a reliable decision. This should be your own exploration, one in which you search out the needs and demands, and then check each one with your interests and abilities.
There are so many career possibilities in science and its related fields that it would take several books just to hold all the information about them. Some of the broad areas of science are listed on the Careers page.
