(020907) Molecular Expressions: Science, Optics and You - Powers Of 10: Interactive Java Tutorial
http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/primer/java/scienceopticsu/powersof10/index.html

Michael W. Davidson
National High Magnetic Field Laboratory
The Florida State University
Tallahassee, Florida , USA

Just over six months ago, Site du Jour of the Day looked at Molecular Expressions: The Beershots Photo Gallery (http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/beershots/index.html) (SdJotD 020302). Also a part of the site for Molecular Expressions: Images from the Microscope (http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/) is Molecular Expressions: Science, Optics and You - Powers Of 10: Interactive Java Tutorial. Suggested by Phil Konstantin, Molecular Expressions: Science, Optics and You - Powers Of 10: Interactive Java Tutorial is easy enough to miss if one is looking at the beer pages — worth seeking out though. Working with exponential notation is all of a sudden easier after a look at this fine presentation. Closing in on a really small object from the distance of ten million light years away is entertaining. Once past a human scale, by factors of ten from the top, it's still a long way to one hundred attometers. You'll want to make a bookmark of this.

For another look at the scale of things, see The MegaPenny Project (http://www.kokogiak.com/megapenny/ ) (SdJotD 010326) from Kokogiak Media. For youngsters this might be the site to see first. (Back to top of page)

(020914) Fontscape
An independent directory of typefaces organized into categories
http://www.fontscape.com/

Human-Computer Interface Limited
Cambridge, England

Similar to the Human-Computer Interface Limited site for Identifont - identify fonts and typefaces (http://www.identifont.com/) (SdJotD 020310), Fontscape — An independent directory of typefaces organized into categories is ideal for those times when you are designing an item and ideas about a specific font family are running wild in your head.

While there are samples and pointers to free Mac and Windows fonts, the majority of the listed fonts come from respected type foundries who sell such things so as to stay in business. The layout and categorization methods used here make navigating Fontscape — An independent directory of typefaces quite easy. Having a working knowledge of type is helpful but not necessary — the interface is both forgiving and inspiring with use. A new site that will only improve with age and experience.

For more about fonts see Chank Fonts & Fine Art (http://chank.com/) (SdJotD 981010) (SdJotD 020311) and Famous Fonts (http://www.eliteentertainment.net/famousfonts/) (SdJotD 000807). (Back to top of page)

(020921) OSHA 3124 - Stairways and Ladders

U.S. Department of Labor
Occupational Safety and Health Administration
Washington, District of Columbia, USA

On The House with the Carey Bros. (1-800-Repair-It)
http://www.onthehouse.com/

Carey Brothers
Pittsburg, California, USA

Between the new technologies being used and the labels warning stupid people not to do stupid things, buying a ladder has turned into a major deal. Forget choosing on the basis of in-store propaganda or the hardware store people there to lend a hand. Instead, search for the topic Ladder at the site for On The House with the Carey Bros. This site, the syndicated newspaper column and the weekly radio show are filled with solid advice on ladders and a host of other home improvement topics.

For guidelines on ladder safety and equipment requirements from the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration site (http://www.osha.gov/), OSHA publication 3124 - Stairways and Ladders should be just the thing. Remember, that the top rung really isn't a step — especially if the ladder is rated for less weight than you might be bringing to that top step. (Back to top of page)

(020928) Rhino Handmade
http://www.rhinohandmade.com/

Rhino Entertainment
Los Angeles, California, USA

Once a very cool independent reissue label, Rhino Records (http://www.rhino.com/) (SdJotD 980909) is now a part of the huge corporate monstrosity known as AOL-Time/Warner. While there are obvious drawbacks from a purist's point of view, the fact that the relationship Rhino has with/as a part of the Warner Electra Atlantic (WEA) family of labels has been a big plus. The extremely eclectic division, Rhino Handmade offers limited edition videos and sound recordings of a little as one thousand pieces. Titles currently listed at Rhino Handmade include The Compete Lidsville: Episodes 1-17, The Fugs - Electromagnetic Steamboat: The Reprise Recordings, Bad Day At Black Rock - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, and Soupy Sales - Blaa-Oh Blaa-Oh Blaa-Oh: The Complete Reprise Recordings. Not available in stores, Rhino Handmade titles clearly represent a dedication to business practices and products that helped grow Rhino Records. And there's some pretty cool stuff to boot. (Back to top of page)
