Create an effective title. Many search engines weight the data in your title more heavily than other data in your page. Make sure that your title has keywords that represent your site effectively.Don't rely just on the search engines to draw traffic to your Web site.
Be creative in thinking of other Web sites that may provide a link to yours - the search engines like to see lots of links to your site. Check out the online presence of all of your professional associations and memberships, e.g. your Chamber of Commerce. Find out whether they have a Web site, and whether it includes a searchable directory of members. If so, it is usually worth paying the fee to give your listing a clickable link to your Web site and e-mail.
Look for local sites where you can place a free "business card" and link to your Web site. These can include local newspapers, for which there is an extensive list at: http://www.mediainfo.com/ and the Small Business Administration in your area: http://www.sba.gov/

If you provide services, such as consulting, training or speaking, there are many Web sites that provide referral directories where you can be listed. Some of these are free, although you will usually have to pay for an "enhanced entry".
Take advantage of some of the free collaborative opportunities that may exist: Have your Web designer make a banner ad for your site, and check out some of the free exchange programs online. One of these is: http://www.linkexchange.com/ Of course, you will have to display other sites' banners on your pages. This is a great way to get traffic to your page.
Link to Competitors' links. If your Web site is not listed in the top thirty, contact all the sites in the top twenty for your category and see if they will trade links with you. Links remain a very powerful method for people to find your Web site.
Consider joining a Web ring. These are sites that all share a common theme or interest, and each site carries a link to the next. You can join one at no charge. You can find a the list at http://www.webring.org/
Keep your site updated. Make sure that your site is up to date. No one likes to go to a page that never changes or that is very out of date. Make sure that the data in your page portrays the message that you want to send.
There are literally hundreds of Web sites online where you can place free classified ads. Only experience will tell which will work for you. A good list can be found at: http://www.icemall.com/allabout/links.html
Utilize the newsgroups. Find newsgroups that pertain to your site and post information about your site in the newsgroups. Make sure you include your e-mail address and your page address.
If you are a good writer, submit an article to one of the ever-growing number of e-zines (electronic magazines) and trade journals online. Check out the searchable catalog of these at: http://www.mediafinder.com/
