Dark Flight

by Shadowdance

My Dark One awakens me this night
The look on his face it scares me
He is not a happy man tonight
He beckons me to hurry.

The wails of town folk fill the air
And fire brightens the skies
They want revenge, they want his blood
I hear it in their cries.

To the stables we race and mount
With naught but the clothes on our backs
And ride we now with the wind
They chase us in their hacks.

His steed, of course, is strong and pure
We pull ahead of the mob
And to a hillside cave we go
Dismounting I begin to sob.

He silences me with a glance
Leads me deep within the lair
Through the darkness I see a light
Find a place prepared for us there.

He watches now the darkened cave
Makes sure I have naught a care
On through the night his vigil kept
He leads me through my despair.

On the morrow it is my turn
I guard my Dark One's sleep
Night fall comes, he awakens
Leads me to our new keep.

And life goes on as before
He keeps me by his side
My Dark One relaxes because he knows
From me he need not hide.
