Child of Faerie, Child of Earth
On Halloween, when magic is in the air, a little girl encounters a fairy child who takes
her to his magical world and pleads with her to stay. Knowing she doesn't belong, she refuses,
convincing her fairy guide to return with her to her home and travel for a time "over the human
road." Yolen adds some sweet details to a story with a familiar folktale ring, presenting all in
pleasing poetry that slips easily off the tongue for reading aloud. Dyer's illustrations are a study in
colorful contrast: the quaint, apple-cheeked girl with a circle of flowers in her hair; the fairy boy in
diaphanous green with sun-dappled wings; a landscape bright with brilliant harvest colors; an
enchanted hall "bedecked in candlelight." A story about a friendship that stretches across some unusual boundaries.

The Complete Book of the Flower Fairies by Cicely Mary Barker
Balderdash by Stephen Cosgrove
(The fourth book in the DreamMaker Classic series helps children of all ages
to learn not to fear the dark, the shadows, and those things that imagination can make.
The place of Bugaboo is where elfin creatures called Woodsprites
live and where the king of twisty snakes and skittering things,
Balderdash, lives. 16 color illustrations.

Dragonfly Secret
Gr. 3-6. Nathan and Jessie's Gramps cusses a blue streak and isn't known for his diplomacy.
Even so, Gramps, his daughter, and her children live happily together,
so when Aunt Louise decides that Gramps would be better off in a retirement home,
everyone in the family is upset. The situation becomes more complicated when Gramps discovers
a wounded fairy, a tiny creature with dragonflylike wings.
With a social worker evaluating them, the family members decide to keep the
fairy a secret and nurse it back to health. Unfortunately, that's not easy with nosy cousin
Allison around.
The author's unique version of an unmagical fairy as part
of the natural world has a good deal of charm, especially the
whimsical notion that fairies may be flitting about in most any group of dragonflies.

Cider Apples by Sandy Nightingale
Ages 5-8. Hoping for a miracle to save their dying apple trees, Holly and her grandmother pour
the last of their cider over the roots of the oldest tree in the orchard on New Year's Eve,
that "magical time" when Holly's grandmother says anything might happen.
A pack of fairies appear, and their leader, an odd little man, agrees to heal the trees if
Holly will plant the seeds from the first apple.
The fairy tale aspect of the story will appeal to many youngsters, and the happy ending,
in which the Apple Tree Man works his magic and saves the orchard,
will be satisfying despite its predictability. Nightingale's bewitching illustrations
capture the magical anything-can-happen mood;
the beautifully detailed winter scenes are filled with talking animals and enchanting fairies.
