The Three Antichrists of Nostradamus: the Dragon, the Beast, and the False Prophet

There is no doubt Michel Nostradamus was a doctor, a family man, and
a Christian converted from Judaism (Leomi, 19). The one question
left unanswered is whether or not Nostradamus was truly a prophet
or just a Bible interpreter. Many correlations exist between the
apocalyptic writings of the Bible and predictions made by
Nostradamus during the 16th century of the Common Era. Perhaps
one of the most shocking, and easily overlooked similarities,
lie within the prophecies of Nostradamus dealing with the "three
antichrists", Napaulon, Hister, and Mabus, as compared to the
dragon, beast, and false prophet found in the book of Revelation.

THE FIRST ANTICHRIST: THE DRAGON

Nostradamus wrote many quatrains, or four-lined visions, about the
first of his three antichrists whom he named as "Napaulon". It
is no coincidence this name sounds and looks similar to
Napoleon. Further study of all of the quatrains pertaining to
the first antichrist shows remarkable similarities to the life,
battles, and death of Napoleon Bonaparte, the French military
leader during the late 18th century C.E. When compared to the
figure of the dragon in the book of Revelation, these quatrains
are eerily similar.

Then another sign appeared in heaven:
an enormous red dragon with seven
heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his heads.
(NIV Study Bible, Revelation 12:3)

Through adverse Mars will the monarchy
Of the great fisherman be in ruinous trouble:
The young red king will seize the hierarchy,
The traitors will act on a day of drizzle.
(C6 Q25) (Leomi, 287)

These passages both allude to the origin of power of this first
antichrist. Note the parallel created by the naming of this
antichrist as the "red dragon" in the book of Revelation and the
"red king" in the quatrain written by Nostradamus. Quatrain 25
of Century 6 has been accepted by most scholars to pertain to
Napoleon if the "great fisherman" is interpreted to be Pope Pius
VI and the "day of drizzle" to mean November, which is called
Brumaire, or "the month of mists", in the revolutionary
calendar. Napoleon, the "red king", led the "traitors" to
overthrow the Bourbon monarchy in the month of November. Initial
proof that perhaps Napoleon is the first antichrist and the
dragon (Hogue, 81).

And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels
fought against the dragon,
and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he
was not strong enough, and they lost
their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled
down--that ancient serpent called
the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world
astray. He was hurled to the earth, and
the angels with him. (NIV Study Bible, Revelation 12:7-9)

The promontory stands between two seas
A man will later die by the bit of a horse:
Proud Neptune unfurls a black sail for his own man.
Through Gibraltar the fleet near Rocheval.
(C1 Q77) (Hogue, 82)

The actual link between these two passages lies within the
interpretation of the quatrain written by Nostradamus. Admiral
Lord Nelson and the British fleet defeated Napoleon near the Cape
of Trafalgar in 1805 seriously damaging the French troops' plans
to invade England. Lord Nelson died during this battle when
Napoleon ordered him to be put to death by strangulation with a
horse's bridle or bit. If this interpretation is correct, the
passage in Revelation can be a representative of this same battle
and Napoleon's defeat. When the author says "the lost their
place in heaven", this could, indeed, be the equivalent of
Napoleon's set back in his march across Europe. Again, these
correlating passages could be indicative of Napoleon being both
the first antichrist and the dragon.

When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the
earth, he pursued the woman who had
given birth to the
male child. The woman was
given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she
might fly to the place
prepared for her in the desert, where she would be
taken care of for a time,
times, and half a time, out of the serpent's reach.
(NIV Study Bible, Revelation 12:13-14)

From simple sodier he will attain to Empire.
From the short robe he will attain to the long.
Brave in arms, the very worst towards the church,
He will vex the priests as water does the sponge.
(C8 Q57) (Hogue, 83)

The woman who gave birth to the male child can be interpreted as the
church. It naturally follows that the quatrain and the verse in
Revelation are comparable again. The quatrain is supposedly
about Napoleon again and his switch from soldier and consul with
the "short robe" to the emperor and a long robe. He was crowned
emperor by blackmailing Pope Pius VII. Once again, these
comparable passages are able to link Napoleon, the first
antichrist, and the dragon.

He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil,
or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him
into the Abyss and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him
from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years
were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short
time. (NIV Study Bible, Revelation 20:2-3)

The Sun and the Eagle will appear as victor,
The vanquished is reassured with a vain reply
With hue and cry they will not cease arming,
Revenge, because of death peace made right on schedule.
(C1 Q38) (Leomi, 143)

In this quatrain of the death of the first antichrist, or Napaulon,
the "Sun and Eagle" will be victorious. As described in
Revelation 12:14, the woman, or in an alternative interpretation,
the church, was given the wings of an eagle. Also, the Sun is
often associated with the forces of good or God. Peace is made
when the dragon is thrown into the Abyss, or death. These are
the final verses linking the first antichrist, Napoleon, and the
dragon.

THE SECOND ANTICHRIST: THE BEAST

Nostradamus predicted two additional antichrists would come after the
death of Napoleon. The second, named Hister, bears a striking
resemblance to Adolf Hitler, charismatic leader of the Third
Reich. If the theory of three antichrists is parallel to the
apocalyptic figures in the book of Revelation, it follows that
Hitler should be the personification of the beast.

The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and
blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months.
(NIV Study Bible, Revelation 13:6)

From the very depths of the West of Europe,
A young child will be born of poor people,
He who by his tongue will seduce a great troop:
His fame will increase towards the realm of the East.
(C3 Q35) (Leomi, 201)

There is an obvious comparison to make here dealing with the mouth
given to the beast and the seduction of a "great troop" by the
antichrist's tongue. This antichrist is later called "Hister" in
other quatrains written by Nostradamus. The immediate thought
when hearing this name is its resemblance to Hitler. Adolf
Hitler was born in Braunau, Austria to rather poor parents. He
used his eloquent speeches to win over the multitudes (Hogue,
109).

He was given power to make war against the saints and to
conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe,
people, language and nation.
(NIV Study Bible, Revelation 13:7)

It will be at this time and in these
countries that the infernal power will
set the power of its adversaries against the Church
of Jesus Christ. This will constitute the second Antichrist, who
will persecute that Church and its true Vicar, by means of the
power of three temporal kings who in their
ignorance will be seduced by tongues which,
in the hands of the madmen, will cut more than any sword.
(Epistle 45) (Leomi, 341)

The antichrist and his adversaries are prophesied by Nostradamus to
use its power against the Church of Jesus Christ. The chosen
verse in Revelation claims the beast will have the power to make
war with the saints. If the second antichrist is Hitler, then
perhaps the "Church of Jesus Christ" should be taken literally.
It could possibly mean the church that Christ followed, or
Judaism. Hitler did have control over every "tribe", sending
them to concentration camps and ultimately annihilating or, as
the Bible verse states, conquering them. These parallel verses
again point to the equivalence of Hitler, the second antichrist,
and the beast.

He also forced everyone, small and great,
rich and poor, free and slave,
to receive a mark on his right hand or on his
forehead. (NIV Study Bible, Revelation 13:16)

The unworthy one embellished will fear the great furnace,
The elected one first, not returning some of the captives:
Great bottom of the world, the Angry Female not at ease,
Barbary, Danube, Malta. And the Empty One does not return.
(Presage 15) (Leomi, 459)

If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity he
will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the
sword he will be killed. This calls for patient endurance and
faithfulness on the part of the saints.
(NIV Study Bible, Revelation 13:10)

These three parallel passages can all be interpreted as prophecies of
the Jewish holocaust during World War II and headed by Hitler.
Many Jewish people, adults and children alike, were branded with
serial numbers on various parts of their bodies as told in the
first Bible passage. The "saints" or Jews had to have faith, be
patient, and be willing to die if that was their destinies. They
did, indeed, die by being burnt in a furnace, as seen in the
vision of Nostradamus. Some did not return from captivity.
Perhaps these verses describing the holocaust are further proof
of the correlation between the second antichrist, the beast, and
Hitler.

This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him
calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His
number is 666.(NIV Study Bible, Revelation 13:18)

This Bible passage may hold an important key to unlocking the mystery
of who the beast really is. The numerical value of any word can
be found to be 666 if enough work is done to figure out the
pattern. Using the scheme of A=6, B=12, C=18, and so on
demonstrated in Boyer on page 283, the name ADOLF A. HITLER adds
up to 666. This is most likely just a coincidence, but perhaps
it is yet another way to link Hitler with the beast.

...The two of them [beast and false prophet] were
thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. (NIV Study
Bible, Revelation 19:20)

After having tarried they will wander into Epirus:
The great relief will come towards Antioch,
The black frizzled hair will strive strongly for the Empire:
Bronzebeard will roast him on a spit.(C1 Q74) (Leomi, 153)

The most important line of this prophecy of Nostradamus is the last
one. Being thrown into a "fiery lake of burning sulfur" and
being roasted on a spit give the same literary impression of
death by fire. Hitler supposedly committed suicide by shooting
himself, but his cohorts then cremated his body in a furnace.
The similarities of these sections seem to indicate a
relationship between Hitler, the beast, and the second antichrist.

THE THIRD ANTICHRIST: THE FALSE PROPHET

The figure of the false prophet is only mentioned in passing and only
in conjunction with the beast in the book of Revelation. There
are other places within the New Testament in which the false
prophet, or prophets, is mentioned. Most scholars agree that the
third antichrist indicated by Nostradamus is yet to make himself
known. There are still some parallels that can be seen between
this third antichrist named "Mabus" and the false prophet, even
if a human figure cannot yet be assigned to them.

But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there
will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce
destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought
them--bringing swift destruction on themselves.(NIV Study Bible,
2Peter 2:1)

"Mabus" then will soon die, there will come
Of people and beasts a horrible rout:
Then suddenly one will see vengeance,
Hundred, hand, thirst, hunger when the comet will run.
(C2 Q62) (Leomi, 179)

The Antichrist three very soon annihilated,
Seven and twenty years of blood will his war last:
The heretics dead, captives exiled,
Blood human body water reddened on land to hail.
(C8 Q77) (Leomi, 371)

The one thing all three passages above agree upon is that this third
antichrist, or false prophet, will meet a quick end to his reign
of terror. All three also seem to indicate the war will continue
on even after the death of Mabus. The second prophecy of
Nostradamus stated above mentions the death of the heretics and
exiled captives. The captives he wrote about in other quatrains
pointed to the Jewish people and can possibly be adopted to this
situation as well.

At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the
Christ! Or, ‘Look, there he is!' do not believe it. For false
Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and
miracles to deceive the elect--if that were possible.
(NIV Study Bible, Mark 13:21-22)

One who the infernal gods of Hannibal
Will cause to be reborn, terror of mankind
Never more horror nor worse of days
In the past than will come to the Romans through Babel.
(C2 Q30) (Leomi, 171)

The connection between these passages may not be quite as obvious as
some of the other examples given earlier. The false prophets
declare the appearance of Christ, but will be wrong, of course.
The quatrain written by Nostradamus can be taken to mean the
"infernal gods of Hannibal" are the false prophets and will cause
Christ to be "reborn" by trying to sway the believers by
performing miracles. Nostradamus seems to predict this
antichrist, or the false prophet will bring even greater misery
than those before him.

The similarities of the predictions by Nostradamus and the prophecies
in the Bible are hard to ignore. Nostradamus may be no more than
a clever interpreter of the Bible, but then again, his detail and
accuracy are indications of true prophetic abilities. If the
pattern holds, and Nostradamus is a true prophet, the Battle of
Armageddon will begin in July of 1999 (C10 Q72) (Leomi, 435).
Though the Bible does warn against trying to set a date for the
end times in many places, it will be hard to gloss over any of
Nostradamus's prophecies ever again.
