"Woa! Socks! Calm down!" yelled Cara as she tried to steer Socks around the corner to her house. They had been walking for 30 minutes. Ever since Cara had gotten Socks back from Jacob yesterday, he had been hyperactive. Cara was tired, but Socks had a whole nother ten miles to go before he was done. They turned the corner, and suddenly Socks stopped. He started barking at something that was coming down a driveway. Cara noticed it was Zac and told Socks to shut up. The dog looked at her, a little confused, and then ran up towards the boy, tugging the leash out of Cara's hand.
"No! Socks!" Cara yelled. But it was too late. The dog had plowed down Zac and was now trying to lick his face. Zac was laughing and yelling the whole time.
Cara ran over to the two of them. "Socks!" she yelled as she picked up the leash and swated him on the butt. "Sorry, Zac."
Zac stood up and smiled at her. She looked really pretty. Her hair was up and she was wearing tight spaggetti-strapped blue shirt with black baggy pants. "It's okay. He does it alot."
"Well, at least he likes you!" said Cara. She had finally gotten Socks to calm down. He was laying in the grass, giving Cara a sign that he wanted to go inside.
"Yea. It looks like he is finally tired," said Zac. "That is one of the most hyper dogs I have ever seen. Even at Jacob's house. He was always trying to knock down his bedroom door so we could pet him." Zac leaned over and tapped the dog on it's head. Socks started wagging his tail viggorously.
"Come on," Cara said to Zac as she pulled on the dogs leash. "I don't have to get ready for another hour, and I need someone to talk to." Cara flashed Zac a smile. "If you can come over, that is."
How could he resist? "Why couldn't I? It's not like I have a life, or anything!" Zac followed Cara to her house. She pulled out a key from her pocket and unlocked the door. Socks tugged at the leash until she let him out of it. He automaticlly ran to his water bowl.
Zac laughed. "Your mom isn't home?" he asked.
"No. She and Jack went to lunch, or something." Cara set her house key on the island in the kitchen. She pulled out two glasses from a cabinet. "Would you like something to drink?"
"Sure." Zac said.
Cara looked at him and giggled. He was being surprisingly quiet.
"What?" he asked. "Do I have a bugger in my nose, or something?" Zac flashed a keen smile.
'There he is,' Cara thought. "Nothing," she said. "You were just being quiet." She handed him a glass of Dr. Pepper. "Come on! Last one to the Sega is a rotten egg!"
They raced up the stairs and into Cara's bedroom, luckily not spilling anything on the carpet. They set their glasses down on a little table by the TV and Cara turned on the system.
"Okay," said Zac. "This time I am going to be first player!" He grabbed the controller out of Cara's hand.
"Well, if you are sure you want it..." Cara laughed at the evil look on his face.
They sat there playing the Sega System for 45 minutes. Suddenly they heard something bound up the stairs. Socks burst into the room, jumping right on top of both Cara and Zac.
"Socks!" they both yelled, pushing the dog off of them. He saw that they didn't want to play, and he ran downstairs and out the dog door in the back.
"If I didn't know any better, I would think that you two were related!" said Cara, switching off the TV.
"Oh, thanks!" said Zac.
"No, I mean you are both so hyper all of the time!" Cara laughed and stood up.
"I'm not hyper!" yelled Zac. He jumped up and chased Cara out of the room. They raced down the stairs, Zac jumping over practically the whole flight. He caught up with Cara and grabbed her around the waist, turning her around. Even thought she was two years older than him, it wasn't hard. She was so little. She tried pulling away from the hold he had on her. Finally she got one wrist free and managed to wrap her arm around his waist, pulling him to the ground.
"Pinned ya!" Cara exclaimed.
"Get off of me!" said Zac, pushing her to the side. He stood up and took Cara's hand to help her up. "I never know such a little person could be so strong!" he said.
"Was that a compliment?" she asked, smiling at him.
"I don't know?" Zac pulled her close to him, pretending he was going to kiss her, like in the movies. "Was it?"
"Oh! Mi amor!" she said in a daydreaming voice. All of a sudden Cara pushed Zac away from her and went into the kitchen. "Hey, look!" she said, pushing a button on the answering machine, "We have a message."
The stood next to the machine, waiting for someone to talk.
"Hello, this is Jane Sotherner. I am calling in regards to an audition for Mythe Beth's Dance Unlimited studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We have looked over your resume and scores from the audition and we are pleased to say that you have been offered a position in out dance school. If you could please call us back, our number is 465-0091. Thank you, and congradulations, Cara!" Beep.
"Yes!" exclaimed Cara. "I got in!"
"Congradulations!" said Zac, giving her a big hug. "I knew you would get in!"
Then the front door opened and in walked Robin and Jack.
"What is all the comotion?" asked Robin, not seeing Zac. "Oh, hello Zacary. I didn't know you were here."
"Mom! Jack! I just got a message. Mythe Beth's is taking me!"
"Well, that is great!" said Robin, hugging her daughter.
"Good job, Cara. I knew you could do it." Jack gave Cara a hug, also.
"Shouldn't you be getting ready, Cara?" Robin asked. "Taylor is going to be over here in 30 minutes and you still have to eat something."
Cara looked at Zac. "I already ate." she said, hoping that Zac wouldn't say anything.
"When?" asked Robin.
"Um, just a few minutes ago. But I still have to get ready, so come on Zac." Cara and Zac walked out to her front porch. Zac just looked at her for a moment.
"What?" asked Cara, looking at the floor.
"You didn't just eat. I have been her for an hour. I think I should know."
Cara looked up at Zac. He looked concerned. Really concerned. "I know. I'm just not hungry right now. And if I didn't tell her that, she would have stuffed something down my throat."
"So?" asked Zac.
"Don't worry. I'll have something to eat at the movies." she said.
"You promise?" asked Zac. He put his hands on her sholders.
Cara smiled. "Promise." She gave Zac a big hug and went inside.
Zac just stood there for a moment. To no one in particular, he said, "She'll eat something. I'll make sure Taylor makes her eat something."
