Astral Senshi Explanation
Here's a question that pops up often: what was I thinking when I made this fanfic series?  I'm not sure of that one myself.  But this page basically tells where I got the names, attacks, the villain names, etc.

Characters

Sailor Zephyr, Daniella Starr
I wanted her to be a tomboyish character, only with a feminine name.  That is, a feminine name that could have a more boyish nickname (i.e. Josephine could be called Joe, but I thought that Josephine sounded too old fashioned).  I decided that her name could be Daniella, but her nickname be Dan or Dani or something.  I don't particularly like that name, but it was the best I could come up with, and it's growing on me.  Her last name is pretty obvious, and no, she's probably not related to Ken Starr.  As for her attacks dealing with stars...it's sorta obvious since astral means, essentially, "star" and that's where I derived Sailor Astra (her original name, before I decided to change it to Zephyr) and the planet Astro from.  And where I got the insane idea to have a destroying the world attack, I dunno, she just had to be the most powerful.  As I said above, her original name was Sailor Astra, but that was too confusing.  Having an Astra and Astro, that was just weird.  The reason I had her come from America is because Starr isn't a common Irish name.

Sailor Vega, Lilia Flores
I've changed her name so many times I can't even remember all the changes!  First it was Shilo le Cave, as a spin-off on my other pen name, Calico le Cave.  Then I changed Shilo to Lila and le Cave to de Lourdes, thus making her Lila de Lourdes.  And since  Lila sounded a little like lily, the name of a flower, I made her attacks flower-based.  It just sounded like a cool thing to base attacks off of, because no other senshi had "flower power" (hehe, cheesy).  Then I changed Lila to Lilia since Lilia means "lily" in Spanish, and de Lourdes to de Larke since that just sounded better.  Then for the rewrite it became Lilia Flores, because Flores is a regular Spanish name and it means flowers.  Why I called her Sailor Vega, I guess it was because in "Contact" they traveled to Vega and that just sounded like a good sailor name...I think.  This is weird, but Vega also sounds like vegetable, and flowers are more vegetables than anything (animal, vegetable, mineral...you know?).  Lilia's looks are also based on me, and you'll notice that on my About Me section of my personal page the "Sailor Willow" pic looks exactly like Sailor Vega (matter of fact, it is Vega...).  Vega's sailorfuku is purple and green because I was originally going to write her into a SM fic and have her be another Inner Senshi, and since none of their fukus were purple, that's what Vega's was going to be.  Whatever.

Sailor Andromeda, Viola Orpheus
She used to be based on Michiru, because they both like music, the same hair only in different colors, and Cloverway (DIE DIE DIE) made Michiru's NA name as Michelle.  Well, Viola's name was originally Michelle.  I guess that's where I got her from, but I changed her personality around for the rewrite and made her more complex, not just a DiC Amy character.  Her name was going to be Melody, because of her music powers (that also seemed like a cool thing to attack with, like the flowers for Vega).  Then I was going to have it be Piper, because that means someone who plays the pipes, I guess.  Then I came up with the idea of her being from Stratford-upon-Avon, where Shakespeare was from, and I had her name be Viola.  It's a musical instrument, but it's also the name of a character in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night (and she says her brother's name is Angelo, who is a character in Measure for Measure).

Sailor Inferno, Anala Kazan
She was called Sailor Nebula at first, but I decided to make her Inferno since all her powers are volcano-based and...well, you can see the connection there.  Her name used to be Daphne, and in Greek mythology Daphne was a nymph whom Apollo changed into a laurel tree.  But that had nothing to do with why I chose it, I just thought it sounded cool.  If I had created a Sailor Soldier whose attacks dealt with trees and named her Daphne (hey, good idea!), that would have had more symbolic meaning.  Her first name means flame, and it's kind of an uncommon name (especially for Ireland), so I had to have her be foreign too (Australian).  Kazan is an English name that sounds like the Japanese word kazan, meaning volcano.

Sailor Io, Mariah Storms
I guess I made Io the Soldier of Storms because Io is a moon of Jupiter and the planet Jupiter has a lot of storms on its surface...also because Sailor Jupiter had a lot of attacks dealing with thunder and lightning (like Supreme Thunder).  Mariah is not named after Mariah Carey (because Mariah Carey is a stuck-up brat), but she's named after a song that Mariah Carey was also named after.  It's called "They Call the Wind Mariah", from a musical I think, and since her powers have to do with wind, there you go.  Her surname is kinda obvious why I chose it.

Soldier Orion, Hunter Rostislav
His attacks have to do with speed, one of them is with arrows.  That's because the constellation Orion is of a hunter and hunters naturally have to be fast.  As for arrows, I just said that Orion is a hunter who probably used arrows to hunt.  Not much to explain there.  I originally named him Ryan, since Orion just sounds like Ryan.  Hunter is obvious also, because like I said (twice already), Orion was a hunter.  Rostislav means "one who becomes glorious", which has nothing really to do with him, it just sounded cool.

Sailor Nova, Ciara Frost
I made Nova the Soldier of Snow since nova sounds like nieva, the Spanish word for snow.  Ciara means dark, and it's an Irish name, so that's good.  Frost is obvious, considering her snow/cold/ice powers.  Her name used to be Moira, because it sounds a little like "muerta," which means death in Spanish.  It also sounds like "mort," which means death in some other language, I think in French.  Her last name was Black because the color black is associated with death and funerals and such.  She used to have red and black as her senshi colors, to symbolize that she was "evil", but that doesn't make sense because those were her colors before she became evil too.  So I changed it to ice blue, black, and white, which makes more sense with ice powers, doesn't it?

Sailor Arcturus, Misty Storms
Her powers are based on clouds since she's the youngest, and her attacks would probably be the weakest, and attacks based on clouds would be weak I guess.  I kind of had to make her and Mariah come from Canada because their names aren't really Irish names.  Her first name, Misty, is kind of obvious.  Storms really has nothing to do with her or her powers or anything, but she's Mariah's sister and it would be weird if they had different names.  The reason I had her be a mute is because before I rewrote it she was just the typical chibi stereotype, and I wanted to break away from that.

Sailor Spica, Aisling Quinn
Both her first name and her last are common in Ireland (and all over the UK, or anywhere they speak Gaelic/Irish).  Aisling means vision, because Spica's powers have to do with dreams (in case you were wondering, it's pronounced like Ashlin).  Quinn means "wise leader", not that she's the leader, but the wise part suits her.  It's kind of stupid how I picked which stars and constellations and stuff they'd come from...I went to this planetarium or something, and they had a phrase on how to identify the stars: "Arc to Arcturus, and speed to Spica."  So I picked those stars as senshi names.  Dumb, ne?

Villains - first season

Lady Diabla
Well, diablo means devil in Spanish.  I guess diabla would be a female devil...?  There used to be a third Death Duchess named Muerta, but I cut her out just because I only really needed two.

Lady Espirita
She was originally called Lady Calavera, calavera meaning "skull" in Spanish.  But I believe there is already a Sailor Moon villain named Calaveras (yes there is...one of the Ayakashi sisters of the black moon I think).  So I changed it to Espirita, since espiritu means spirit in Spanish.  Hey, anyone notice a trend here in the naming of the Death Duchesses?  They're all named after Spanish words (words that have a somewhat morbid meanings) that have been altered a little to make them sound more like names.

Nova
What's to explain?  I explained it all up there.  Well, why I made her the evil senshi is because she would have been probably the easiest to convert.  Her home planet was destroyed by a nearby star that went nova, but she was saved because at the time she was training to be a senshi on Astro.  They convinced her that her planet was destroyed by the Astrans, or that it was their fault somehow, and since she wasn't actually there she would believe what she was told.

Oscurio
His name is a twist on the Spanish word for dark, oscuro.  His name was Oscuro at first, but I changed it thinking Oscurio sounded more like a name, more natural.  This also explains why he attacks with darkness.

Cuchillo (pronounced koo-chee-oh)
His name means knife in Spanish...thus explaining why his attacks all revolve around knives and why he always throws a knife whenever he appears on the scene (like Tuxedo Mask with his roses).  I don't know why I named all the villains after Spanish words, I guess Spanish words just sound nifty and villain-ish.

Soldara
Her name is kind of a variation on how to say "soldier" in Spanish, which is "soldado."  At first I called her Soldada but thought that sounded dumb.  So I changed the second D to an R...Soldara.  That sounds more like the English word "soldier" too, which is what it's supposed to mean.  She attacks with fire and heat because the Spanish word for sun is in her name too: "sol."  And the sun is firey and hot so, there ya go.
