STORY
BEHIND THE POEM THE BAG THAT WASN’T THERE
.
Two young policemen working together
one day in Gastown, arrested a young fellow. A quick search was done and
he was loaded into the wagon and taken to jail.
.
When he arrived in jail and was about
to be booked in, one of the jail staff noticed a plastic bag sticking out
of his pocket in plain view. When he checked further, he found it to be
quite a large bag of Marijuana. It really brought home the importance of
properly searching arrested persons, because you never know what you will
find.
.
There have been occasions in the jail
where, knives and even guns have been found on prisoners who had already
been searched. I wrote the poem at the time, not to criticize the two officers,
but to remind everyone, that it is easy to miss something and so be sure
and search carefully.
.
As an interesting aside, both police
officers mentioned in this poem had resigned from the department within
a year to pursue other lines of work. Both resignations had nothing to
do with this incident.
