Judge, The Wonder Dog
Al Dunn, was still fairly new
to the Dog Squad as was his faithful partner, Judge. There had
been a few problems during training with Judge being, just a touch
under aggressive.
Well, on this fateful night,
Sergeant Barnard, Pat Hudson and Tony Zanatta were going to check
the patrons of a local "restaurant" called Kim's Kitchen.
This was one of the sleaziest dives in the whole Downtown Eastside
and a known hangout for drug dealers, addicts, pimps and other
assorted criminals. They called for another unit for additional
cover, and Al, being just around the corner, volunteered.
He left Judge in the police
unit since he wouldn't be needed for this. As the four were checking
the clientele, Mike Barnard looked towards the front door and
was amused to see a fellow and his dog. The two would walk forward
until they bumped heads on the glass door. This happened several
times. Thinking that maybe the fellow was blind and did not realize
the door opened outwards, Mike moved over and held the door open
for him. The pair wandered into the restaurant.
It quickly became apparent that
the fellow wasn't blind, just dead drunk. What became apparent
even more quickly was that the dog did not belong to him, but,
was in fact Al's dog, Judge. The amazing part about this, is
that the fellow was able to even get close to the car. Most of
the dogs go absolutely crazy when anybody, except their master
approaches their territory, the car.
In this instance, what they were able to piece together later, is that Judge got lonely and started to whine. The drunk, feeling sorry for the dog opened the door and let Judge out. He was rewarded by Judge jumping up and "kissing" the face and hands of his unlikely benefactor. Why this poor fellow didn't get torn to pieces is unknown to everyone but, Judge, and he isn't telling.
