The Sourwood Honey Experience...by Queen P I don't think that most people view Columbia, SC as a musical mecca by any standard of evaluation. It just doesn't seem likely at all on the surface, but I promise if you do a little digging there actually is talent in Cola town. Believe it or not. I had heard many stories of the legendary Sourwood Honey, but had never had the opportunity to hear their music. I guess I was expecting Matchbox 20 or a Hootie rip-off when I popped their cd in. I've been wrong many times before so this would be no exception. They struck me as more of a bluesy Southern version of Widespread Panic. I was a little worried at first because traditional Southern rock is overdone to the point of annoyance. However, Sourwood Honey adds their own flair to the tradition and actually made me want to listen.
They are most definetely a "live" band. When we went out to Elbow Room to see them, they came on stage ready to play and we could tell this would be a lengthy evening when they added jam session intermittently throughout each song. They would start playing and then all of a sudden, the music would take a different form and I think they just played it by ear as to what felt good to them. That is true blues form. No scary redneck rock here. The singer has such a beautiful voice that comes off even better in real performance than it does on the cd. Also suprising to us was how good the guitar player, Herbie, is. He was excellent! Their legendary greatness around 5 Points was apparent because I've only seen Elbow as packed on one other occasion (the Skinnee J's of course!) These guys seemed to know everyone in the audience and often took pauses to give a little shout out or greeting to anyone they might recognize. The whole set had a very friendly, comfortable feel to it. Please don't go out to see them if you don't plan on parking yourselves there for a while. If my memory is correct the performance was more than 2 hours long, some of which was individual guitar solos or vocal harmonies. Open your mind to a festival experience and go out to mingle with some of Columbia's own. We think you will like the music and you'll probably leave befriended by the band members. Maybe there is still hope of us becoming a musical mecca? The next Seattle maybe? |
