ALMOST SPRING

by Carolyn Hall and Carolyne Rohrig

almost spring
a japanese maple abloom
with beaded rain

the newborn wearing
her first diamond studs

scrabbling for a teat
the kitten’s eyes
still closed

white mushroom caps
peek through
the manure mix

fresh from the oven
hot cross buns

knotting the last stitch
a meadow of wild poppies
in her needlepoint

RACING THE SUN

by Carolyne Rohrig and Carolyn Hall

late moon rising
a drunk's shadow lengthens
on the town square

weaving in and out of rushes
a water snake

Navajo painting
her quicksilver brush strokes
on the lightning bolt

cross-country course:
racing the sun to the horizon
summer solstice

a bear stumbles from his den
first buds of spring

the tap of her white cane
she follows the honeysuckle
home

STUCK IN THEIR TRACKS

by  Carolyn Hall and Carolyne Rohrig

tall summer grass —
stuck in their tracks
reindeer and sleigh

throughout the subway car
his garlic breath

labyrinth . . .
the rat homes in
on the cheese

icicle morning —
the ski lifts come and go
empty

in the wake of the plow
unplanted furrows

holiday dinner
mom’s smile
full of braces
