ONE MORE BIRTHDAY

by Carolyn Hall and Carolyne Rohrig

first star
grandma wishes
for one more birthday

    into a dark hole
          a tulip bulb

gutter armada –
wind fills the sails
of the children’s leaf boats

     shadow passing
     over the vineyard
     a hot-air balloon

beneath a damp towel
the bread dough rising

      a final ride
      on the ferris wheel –
      he kisses her hand

           PEELING BACK THE LEAVES

by Carolyn Hall and Carolyne Rohrig

holiday weekend
the tea rose takes its time
 to open

     mating strut
     a peacock fans his tail

 tenth anniversary
 she peels back artichoke leaves
 to the heart

    life drawing class
    he shades the curve
    of her breast

 white noise
 wavelets lap at the cove

    luxury hotel
    golden-agers snuggle
    under silk sheets

         RETURN HOME KISS

by Carolyn Hall and Carolyne Rohrig

school's out
a child's fist overfull
with caterpillars

      return home kiss
      my son's soft whiskers

clinging
to the ancient oak
mistletoe

      night of stars
      lovers light a baked Alaska
      by the fire

the spark of altar candles
in her upturned eyes

      New Year's Eve
      last night's confetti
      on their pillows
